Post subject:  cracked ignition coil **PICTURE HEAVY**

I was getting a misfire in cylinder four. Opened up the hood and found the coil and the connector wire cracked. I thought it was odd that it would get cracked in the position it's in. My first thought, being the paranoid type that I am, was that when I had it at the mechanic recently to get my ignition switch replaced that maybe they bumped it... but I can't see why they would be anywhere near cylinder four to replace an ignition switch. Then I thought they may have broke it on purpose to get me back for more repairs.... said I was paranoid didnt I?

Then I noticed that the radiator overflow tank looks like some stuff may have been leaking out and landing on the coil. I can see how a hot coil might crack if water dripped on it but the broken plastic harness clip still makes me curious. Anybody had anything similar?

you know, I wonder if something is pushing down on the coil at the connector? if something is/was it could wear away at the connector though friction from vibration, and if it's pushing down hard enough it could eventually fatigue the coil right at that point and crack it.

The only thing even close is the rubber Jose from the overflow and it's a good two inches or more above the coil.

guess it's also possible that the coil could have overheated and essentially exploded. it's been years since I've seen it happen but one of my older cars (1992 Dodge Shadow) popped it's coil twice like that. looked like some kind of insane science project when it would do it.

while it's a definite curiousity (and it does look like some kind of coolant contamination all over it that should be dealt with) I'd almost say shrug it off, replace the coil and move on.
