my jeeps motor used to make a bad tapping noise.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkelChkwjWo

I did some diagnostics and pulled some codes. after thinking about it and doing some research i pulled both valve covers off and to my big surprise i found a rocker missing on my 6th cylinder exhaust valve. the rocker was there, just not where is was supposed to be :D . btw huge pain in booty to pull valve cover off left side. wiring harness and rad hooses in the way.
i managed to get to rocker back into place and put everything back together. i also replaced the plugs and wiped the memory clean of codes. no more check engine light and it sounds better then ever.

if this has happened to anyone else let me know and if this happens to u, i can answere any question about it and tell u how i did it through the steps.

heres some prove pictures.

question is, did you figure out and solve WHY the rocker fell off? did you check the adjuster to make sure it was extending correctly? rockers don't fall off like that without something else being Really Wrong.

everything was fine. the lifter worked properly. the valve spring wasn't broken. i read on a another forum that gunk can get in by the valve and with combination of the gunk and 10w 30 oil the valve may have got stuck down and when the camshaft went through the turn is got knocked out of place. im gonna do a engine oil flush and run some engine cleaner throuigh the motor and same with throuigh the fuel and use 5w 30 oil instead. and if the rocker falls off again i'll have to investigate more to why its falling off.

I have a highly dubious look on my face on the stuck down theory of the valve. if it did that I'd expect Other Really Bad Things to have happened (like piston to valve contact.) I'd more believe the adjuster has failed in the down position, which means that rocker is going to come out again.
