Post subject: Transfer Case Forced Neutral?
PostPosted: Mon Mar 27, 2006 9:18 am
Has anyone been off roading in 4x4 HIGH (or any mode for that matter) and hit a bump real hard and then not be able to move for a few minutes? If so, what is really going on? Is it possible to involuntarily pop the transfer case into neutral from an impact even though the indicator light still shows 4x4 HIGH and the transfer case lever is in the appropriate 4x4 HIGH position?

This happened on the very first hit of the day. Then, I had no problems the rest of the day. I had this happen once on my 1989 Z-71 Pickup truck when I spun out on an icy logging trail and slammed both passenger side tires into a snow/ice bank at the same time - 4x4 popped out even though it showed indicated as engaged, and did re-engage after a few minutes???

Hmmm... I don't know. In all my years with 4x4s I've never had that happen to me. Strange...

I went out and cycled through all the 4x4 modes again at lunch, everything seems normal. Maybe it was a transmission quirk? Is it possible the transmission did not pick up fluid from the pan for a second or two during a large bounce?

Any ideas folks? I talked with another KJer this weekend on our run and he had the same problem on a gas liberty - he could not explain it either, only confirm that it happened. Surely it's happened to a few others...

same thing happened to mine, but it was in 4lo. just popped right out while i was trying to manuveur up a hill. maybe i just didnt engage it all the way, it seems like there are two clicks when you pull it up from neutral to 4lo.

this is common on both Xfer cases that come in the KJ
as luck would have it ti did not come all the way out
if you dont engage the xfer case while in motion then it may not full engauge
it can then pop in when you go or be just barely hold in until you hit some thing
what happens then is that i pops to neutral but i have noticed that the KJ tends to somee times
somehow renguage it self
the pop out to neutral is very common on wranglers but the KJ can go both ways
rember that these xfer cases are not synchronized so both the in put speed and the out pu speed need to
be mached or something like that
all in all its no big deal just next time hit 4wd while in motion :)
