| Post subject: | Bump stop too long? |
This is my first Jeep (original owner) and I'm enjoying making it a bit more capable.I just had my new JBA control arms installed on my 2005 Renegade. Also terra flex bump stops. With a 2" lift, is the bump stop too long? Not sure what if any problems this could cause. The shop originally told me stock bump stop would be fine but after reading some I decided for the Terraflex. Not the best picture: https://www.dropbox.com/s/dc95f0eqqaot9y8/Photo%20Jan%2017%2C%2011%2036%2042%20AM.jpg Any opinions appreciated. |

That's a good bumpstop it will save your fenders/flares from damage when you get bigger tires! |

Im currently running an OME lift(no clevis) and for me the Teraflex ones are too long. I bought them, but they have been sitting in my toolbox. Yours looks to be ok Sent from a rock |

Thanks for the replies. The new UCA's and LBJ's really made a huge difference in handling. No more bump steer! |

I have the Teraflex 2" lift with their bumpstops. Seems fine to me. |

Old rule of thumb for every inch of lift an inch of bumpstop |

i have the ome hd lift, no clevis or top plate. i tried the terraflex bumpstops but took them off. they seemed too long. i could feel them hitting on the highway and i was having a hard time getting up the rocky hills i was able to climb before the lift. if i do the clevis and top plate, i will put them back on. |

What about a basic ironman lift? I know ome struts have built in bumpstops Sent from my Home Phone using Tapatalk 2 |

tommudd wrote: Old rule of thumb for every inch of lift an inch of bumpstop Geometrically, it would seem to me that if your lift is from a spacer type lift, a longer bumpstop would be beneficial, on a one to one ratio, since the distance between the control arm and the rest of the body (i.e., like the top of the wheel well where the bumpstop mounts) would be greater. That would limit the angular motion of the control arm to the same extreme as the stock setup. But if you ground out the control arm pockets to gain additional flexibility, it seems it would be counterproductive. Using a shorter bumpstop would allow the control arm to take advantage of the larger pocket openings, and since the top of the tire would be lower relative to the fender, it should be safe to use the shorter bumpstops. However, if your lift comes from extending things below the control arm, like the OME or the JBA, the distance between where the control arms sit relative to the rest of the body (like to where the bumpstop mounts) remains unchanged. Therefore, it would seem that, all other things being equal (including tire size), the stock bumpstops would be the proper height; the angular motion of the control arm would also remain the same. This setup would also keep the control arms from taking full advantage of the bigger control arm pocket openings; for that, you would need shorter bumpstops, which does not seem practical since the stock ones are pretty short already. Now, if you are going to put bigger tires in, (with either type of lift or even with the stock suspension) then additional bumpstop height might be needed, since the top of the tire, all other things being equal, would be closer to the fender when the control arm is at the bumpstop. But, my guess would be that the ratio there would nominally be one inch of additional bumpstop for every half inch of tire increment (but should be further adjusted based on the ratios of the lengths from the control arm pivot to the bumpstop and from the control arm pivot to the top of the tire). |

I think I got that last paragraph backwards, nominally on half inch of bumpstop for every additional inch of tire height. |

Some of you all think way too much and put too much into a simple thing Look at any lift made , they have bumpstops As far as OME goes yes they say they have built in bumpstops although I know of a couple of shocks that were blown were bumpstops would of saved them Plus keeping tire/wheels out of the flares But in the end do what you want and then learn for yourselves |

I know ome struts have built in bumpstops Sent from my Home Phone using Tapatalk 2 OME is part of ARB - as such they have the resources to actually test things they also sponsor race teams and such to get data not aware of anyone else that does that. however that's for OME installed per OME directions - once you start adding clevis lifts and top plates - you're on your own an extended bump stop will lose a little articulation - but it might save your front shocks if you're hitting the longer bumpstop on a regular basis - your springs might be on the light side for your setup. |

The idea is to stop the shocks from bottoming out which will damage them. You want to stop the shocks compression at least 1/2" from full compression. Also remember any front shock(minus 4"+ lifts) are the same compression/extension as the stock front shocks.Using any top plates besides the OEM one requires extended front bumpstops,IE the daystar top plates that is also used in the Frankinlift. |

Now that's something I hadn't considered in all my thinking, I will just have to think some more.

Wow, great responses to my original question! Thanks everyone. I'm almost afraid to mention that while i have the TerraFlex up front, i'm still using the factory bump stops in the rear. I guess it may be hockey puck time soon. |
