ok, problems seem to have sneaked up on me, at first the revs seemed to have trouble climbing and the car would struggle to accelerate but this would quickly clear. then it started to fade suddenly occasionally, then more often until now its undrivable, if i rev it stationary it will not go past 3000 and will often die at high revs. it is throwing the code p0039 (after much key jiggling) i have now unplugged the maf and cleaned the map which was extremely crudded up with wet oily guff (i was uber careful). it has always whistled at 2000 revs. i was unsure about the potential seriousness to the running of the condition of various pipes, intercooler , boost(?) etc. i am fairly new to diesels but quick to learn and willing to have a crack/buy tools or whatevers needed. my main problem is not knowing what to fix! it seems illogical for it to be the crank position sensor as it fades while stationary but i don't really know that. any ideas, hints, micky taking, sarcasm gratefully received. thanks . david |

I had this same problem with my '02 about a month ago. You symptoms are the same. The crank position sensor comes into play whenever the engine is on, regardless of sitting still or moving as it is monitoring the engine rotation not transmission output. In my case it was the crank position sensor. I swapped it out and the problems went away. If you're going to do it yourself, be careful removing the old sensor. You need to pull straight out, but the right hand catalytic converter is in the way. I ended up trying to pry mine using the mounting tab and broke the sensor off flush with the block! A bunch of cursing later, I managed to drive a screw into it, and pull it with vise-grips, but you don't want to have to deal with that Todd |

Welcome to LOST. There is a lot of good info in the CRD section, particularly in a thread called "Sam's Noob Guide." You should definitely check that out. |

turns out it was the fuel filter, who would have thought all those symptoms pointing to electrics and it was fuel. changed it in about 10 minutes and it was instantly like a new car, why didnt i try that first. anyone need a probably ok crank position sensor? |

Wow. Glad your up and running again, but too bad about the sensor. The symptoms really did sound just like the way mine was acting when the crank position sensor was toast. For others reading this thread, I also missed that David's problem was with a CRD. Mine was gas. I have no idea if that should've made a difference in diagnostics though considering the code thrown. |

Hold on to it. Chances are fair to good that you'll need it. |
