I have a 2004 manual 5 speed with a transmission problems. A friend borrowed the jeep and stopped in fifth gear at a stop sign. The transmission bound up and wouldnt shift out of fifth. Unfortunately, they forced it out of gear. Shortly thereafter another friend did the same thing. Now the transmission binds and is sluggish when shifting into fifth. The other gears shift normally. I think it could be a bent shift linkage but am guessing at this time.

What are my options? Should I drop the transmission and take it to the shop or purchase a used tranny from a junk yard. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

I would first start with checking the linkage, does it make noise going into 5th and then once your in 5th gear it stops? YJ's have issues with the synchro's making noise when you shift them into a certain gear as the tran's gets older. After changing the fluid out with Redline it really quieted them down and they shifted great. Might try that and see if it fixes it..

There is no noise associated with the shifting into fifth. Would the syncros cause problems when I down shift out of fifth gear at highway speeds? It takes an estimated fifteen pounds of force to put it into fifth, no noise just resistance from netral position to get into fifth. and even more force to get it out of fifth. Double cluthing has no effect on the problem when shifting. How would I chech the linkages?

ah I don't think Syncro's going bad would cause that much force to shift, I don't know though. As for the linkage, I'm guessing just pull the center console up where the shifter is in the vehicle. Never messed with a tranny linkage in a KJ, just wranglers..
