Hi there. This is my first post so I will try and make it brief but specific. I have a 2003 Liberty with a 3.7L V6 While driving home tonight I heard what sounded like an odd rattling sound from my front end. Ive had exhaust problems in the past and thought it sounded like the exhaust had come loose. While continuing my drive home but at slower speeds my jeep began to make loud random clunk/pops that I could feel from under the floor. The noise does NOT happen in reverse and DOES appear to happen regardless of bumps. To test it I rolled the vehicle in neutral and still experienced the sound. I have taken off both front wheels and can find no issue with a loose caliper, or problems with the rotor. I checked the main drive shaft and the driveshaft ujoints seem to be fine. ANY suggestions would be very helpful. |

The joint where the intermediate shaft and passenger side CV joint connect is a common problem and can cause some serious clunking when it goes bad. Another common issue is the cv joint on the front driveshaft. Check the rubber boot on that- if it's torn or missing, that could be the problem because all kinds of gunk can get in those bearings. I'd check that first because you don't have to dissasemble anything to find out. Its also easy to remove- you can pull it and see if the clunk disappears when you drive, you just won't have 4wd while it's out. |

Update: Did some more troubleshooting today. When in 4wd and while pressing down on the gas the clunking eases into a soft rapid clicking sound. I think its definitely an issue with the front drive shaft. I'll be removing it tonight and will update the thread with results if people care. |

When the intermediate shaft splines strip out it makes less noise in 4wd. An easy way to test this is to put it in 4 WD and make a right hand turn with the passenger window open. You will hear the noise get louder. |

Just an FYI- you can buy just the cv portion of the front driveshaft for a fraction of the cost of the whole thing. It only takes a few minutes to remove and replace. Also, if you find out it's the passenger side cv, get the napa refurbished one for a replacement- seems there have been problems with other alternatives. |
