Post subject:  Have you heard/been hearing this? Front Drive shaft... Video

From what I've been reading I think the front drive shaft is most likely the problem...
Hearing a clicking/clanking noise in 4-HI going forward and reverse not all of the time though it seems to come and go so have had a heck of a time pin pointing it.
And I really don't want to start throwing parts at it till it goes away. LOL

So it may be a long shot but here's a couple video clips I took on my way to work this morning while it was acting up. What does this sound like to you guys?

Thanks in advance!

First look at the rear boot of the front driveshaft, if its missing/worn, start there, easy fix
next get it up where you can check the CVs/Intermediate shaft

x2

Rear boot on the front drive shaft is a known problem. We've replaced ours twice already, now it's checked every oil change and we have extra boot kits on hand just in case.

It kinda sounds like mind right now... Kind of like dragging spoons. I had my buddy put it up on a lift... And sure enough... It's my transfer case. Sounds like metal floating around or a broken chain or something... Rather than Troubleshoot this time.. I picked up a used transfer case for a hundred bucks and I'm swapping it out tomorrow... I hope it's not the same problem for you. But if it is car-part.com is your friend!

Well I finally got under the Jeep and did find what looks to be a torn boot on the front drive-shaft rear CV joint. Also found I have a leaky front diff seal.

So I found a Rear CV Joint Rebuild Kit from AM-Auto Parts for $127.25 Is this just as good as an OE rebuild kit? Or am I better off going to dealer for it?

It says it includes: And replaces Hollander# 430-00471 / OE# 52105884AA, 52099498AD and 520994 / Dorman# 932-301
1 Joint Assembly
1 Shaft Flange
1 Dust Cover
6 Bolts
1 C Clip
1 Boot
1 Boot Clamp

The other question I have now is that the sound is also happening while in 2wd as well not nearly as loud but with windows down can hear clearly.
Does the front drive-shaft still freewheel while in 2wd that would be causing me to hear this?
Or is it just hanging there for the free ride when in 2wd where I should be looking for other things as well?

Thanks everyone in advance. I hope that the pictures and videos help other guys with this issue as well.

$1257 to rebuild the CV joint on the front drive shaft? You can get a new drive shaft for under 400 bucks. Or you can get this rebuild kit for 55 dollars for the rear CV on the drive shaft.

My mistake. :banghead: Major typo glad I wasn't trying to sell something. I meant 127 but on the other hand I'm glad I did. Thanks for the Link. :D

That's a great deal. At that price I'm tempted to just order the whole shaft assembly and save myself labor time!

EDIT: Actually after watching the video it looks like my niece could install the rebuild kit! Going to order this up and see if my problems go away!
