Post subject:  Quick question about bump stops

Is this principle correct (I think I remember reading this but couldn't find the post): For every inch of lift you should have about an inch of extra bumpstop to protect the springs from stacking and the shocks from bottoming out? For example, a JBA rear coil spring that gives you 4 inches of lift should be paired with about 3-4 inches of additional bumpstop (or 2 hockey pucks)? The reason I ask is when my lift was installed earlier this week, they didn't install the rear 3" bump stop extensions that came with the kit (which go inside the rear springs like hockey pucks). I'm wondering if I need to go back and have that fixed. What does your experience tell you?

2 inches should be enough "extra" bumpstops for yours. Unless you are running much larger tires or wider than normal wheels that would hit the flares when off road

Thanks. So, I do need something more than the stock bumpstops back there...

If you plan on wheeling it and like your body work the way it is yes.

would I need to add bumpstops for OME 1 1/2" lift on CRD?

Oh yeah Woodtick again with a OME lift as with most suspension lifts you gained more down travel and height but you also gained more up travel.

Thanks for the feedback. One more question: Would hockey pucks fit inside JBA 4 inch springs on a KK? I'm thinking of using one puck per side-- but correct me if you think I would need two stacked on top of each other to get enough height.

The pucks should fit through the springs just fine with all the wieght off the rear axle. So just jack the jeep up and and press on the axle on one side slide the pucks through and repeat. You may even get lucky and just need to jack it up. And you will need 2 per side to get enough hieght and may sure to get either a flat bolt head or recess it into the puck some unless your going the glued route.

Need two per side

Regular bolt works good, that way if you ever need to remove it will not be a huge PITA.
A few have tried to glue them but most all have fell out

I'm thinking a grade 8 bolt for strength, with a washer at the top. Do you usually drill out the top puck to recess the bolt and washer, or is it ok not to? How far should the threaded end of the bolt extend out from the bottom puck (into the spring platform, for lack of the correct term)? :juggle:

Funny how one question can turn into several once you know too much. :-)r

I found Budke's hockey puck how-to writeup on JeepKJ, and it answers my questions. Here is the link in case anybody else has similar questions later: http://www.jeepkj.com/forum/f202/how-install-rear-bumpstops-hockey-puck-version-43989/

Don't need Grade 8 bolts to hold them in, way overkill
Never recessed the bolts either, why? Bolt head is not going to hurt anything
want them long enough to get a nut on the bottom. On 2 of them I use a 2.25 inch long bolt, 3 use 3.25 inch long etc
