| Post subject: | Going for the regear, BUT... |
My current set of Destination AT's finally have about 30K on them, so I'll be upgrading to 245/75/16 for my next set of tires. With added weight of an ARB bumper, sliders, etc., I decided that a regear to 4.10's will be happening when the new tire size gets installed. I already have a complete Dana 30a with 4.10's installed ready to rock (just gotta get over to PA to pick it up), and had sourced the gears, Detroit Locker, and installation kit several months ago, and was planning on getting everything for the 8.25 read from JBA. BUT.... I noticed that JBA has jumped the price of the Detroit Locker by $175, and the price of the Spicer gear set has jumped significantly also! I will be contacting them to see if their price includes the installation kit or not. My question: For those who have done the gear swap; any brand(s) I should focus on, or stay away from?? Any good sources for gear sets, lockers, and installation kits would be appreciated. Also for those that have already done the swap to 4.10's.... Did you experience any significant change in mileage (up or down)? I'm currently around 14.5 mpg, with 85% of my driving at less than 45mph, and short hops (I drive only 6 miles to work each way, a couple miles to the grocery store, etc.) I know from what I've read here I should experience some performance changes, Just hoping to stay in the same neighborhood mileage wise. Thanks. |

Subscribed... Good luck with the 4.10 swap. Are you going to DIY or have a shop do it? |

Auto part prices have been jumping in price for the last 2-3 years. The parts are also less quality, well your common parts not aftermarket stuff like gears and lockers. When I went from 3.73's to 4.10's I was running 265/75's and gained 6mpg's city and 8mpg's highway. The fronts of course are all Dana/Spicers gears but for the rear I used Yukon and was very happy.Yukon and Dana/Spicer are good brands, not sure if Precision is still around but they used to be good also along with Superior Gear.Richmond is okay but softer gear sets geared torward drag racing. |

Regarding prices; Most places I've priced (online and otherwise) have the Detroit Locker at $640 - $675. Gears are running about $200 - $240 depending on manufacturer. With the current prices listed, it would cost me nearly $1400 to regear just the rear axle if I get everything from JBA, and that doesn't include labor. I prefer dealing with businesses I'm familiar with, and I was fully prepared to spend the $1000 I knew it would take for the regear out back, but a 40% increase in prices has me looking for other options. Any thoughts or opinions on "Motive Gear"?? Rusty's Off Road carries their gears and overhaul kits. Never heard of Motive Gear, but I know a lot of people from the Jeep world that buy from Rusty's. |

I've been running Motive for over 50,000 miles and no issues to date I did buy them about 4-5 years ago though just to have them ready so not sure of the quality of them currently |

Pulled the trigger today on the regear. Got the order in for Motive Gear 4.10 Ring & Pinion, Detroit Locker, and installation kit from Rusty's Off Road this evening. I expect to take delivery in 7 - 10 days. The final piece of the puzzle will be picking up the full 4.10 Dana 30a assembly waiting patiently for me in PA. With luck, I'll be "Locked & Loaded" by the end of August. |

I got everything for the rear from Rusty's Offroad. They had the gear set, bearing kit, and Detroit Locker in stock. I got the works for a little over $900. The only reason I went Rusty's instead of JBA was the locker was only $650 from Rusty's, were JBA wanted $825. Overall, it would have cost about $1300 to get the same parts from JBA. I prefer to do business with people I'm familiar with, but in this case, saving $400 made the difference, and Rusty's has been around for a long time. I know a few people who've dealt with them on other 4x4 projects, so...... I saved myself a few bucks. Just waiting for June now..... That's when the front diff I bought with 4.10's already installed will finally be in my garage.... |
