Post subject:  Valve Cover Gasket Leak?

Hello,

I'm seeing what looks like some sort of oil leak on the passenger side rear of my motor, rear valve cover bolts are soaked and a tiny amount is dripping onto the manifold... :banghead:

I'm thinking its the valve cover gasket, any ideas/tips on installation and removal?

Thanks in advance!

There is an article on here that deals with that - someone shared it with me once but I cant find it. Try Google. It wasn't too bad, the passengers side was the pain, you have to unbolt the coolant tank and some hoses and carefully maneuver the valve cover off and on.

Yep, what John 3:17 said.

Besides the gaskets be sure to buy some distilled water and HOAT antifreeze as you'll lose a bit during this project.

Remove the air cleaner and intake hose to the throttle body. You'll need to remove the coolant reservoir and the bottom hose connecting it to the cooling system and set it to the side. Then remove the bolt on the oil filler neck that retains the clip holding the heater core hoses. Once the bolt is out remove the heater core hoses from the pipes on the firewall and secure out of the way (having the clip removed at the oil filler enables you to keep the hoses attached to the timing cover but still able to move them out of the way.) Disconnect the coil pack wire harnesses. Loosen all the bolts to the valve cover and tilt the cover toward the exhaust manifold; you'll probably tear a bit of the firewall insulation around the bottom corner of the valve cover as you maneuver the cover away from the cam and rocker arms.

Clean off any gasket or oil residue from the cylinder head making sure to keep debris out of the oil galleys. Peel the old gasket off the valve cover, scrape gasket and oil debris off the cover and press out the old grommets. Replace with new gasket and grommets and reverse everything above.

Hope this helps.
