Hello Jeep fans, Here is my dilema I have a 2007 Jeep liberty, recently I lost oil pressure and the engine started knocking and eventually stalled. It will start but it has a really loud tapping sound I have taken the valve covers off and dropped the oil pan I see no damage but there is metal in the oil not chunks just flakes any suggestions on what I can do next. I have heard it could be an oil pump or a rod I NEED HELP |

If there is no visible damage to the inner workings that you can see by taking the valve covers off and the oil pan off, but you still have metal in the oil coupled with a loss of oil pressure, I would begin to suspect the oil pump may have gone bad. |

That's what I have heard, Im just trying to figure out what else it could be I have also been told it could be a rod or bearing which would explain the knocking sound. Does that sound like a possibility to you, I would think if there was internal damage it would be visible |

The flakes are most likely bearing pieces. to 'see' the damage you will have to start pulling rod caps and possibly the main caps. The bad part is that when there is metal in the pan, your usually looking at replacing the short block at least. |

If you're hearing the sound in the video below (click the picture) you have a rod bearing that has gone bad. I swapped out this engine for one from an '07 Dakota with only 9700 miles - running beautifully. It's easier, cheaper and faster to swap the engine if bad rod bearings than rebuilding your current engine. Here's a link to the swap overview. ![]() Bob |
