I'm having an issue with the jeep not wanting to go into 4wd (neither hi nor lo). Just to get it out up front, I just removed the front drive shaft and replaced the cv joint boot (transfer case side). My first thoughts were that this was the culprit, but now I'm not sure. I can't think of why doing this would have caused 4 to stop working....but there may be something I'm missing.

The shifter feels as if it is not connected, as in it moves all the way from 2wd to 4lo very smoothly without giving any indication it is trying to shift into 4. None of the 4wd lights come on the dash at 4lo or 4hi positions.

If you have any advice, please let me know! Thanks in advance.

Figured out what was wrong. The cable WAS disconnected. It seems like I'm missing some type of snap on button or something that should connect the cable to the tcase lever.

Since that piece is probably impossible to find, I might just drill the connecting piece out and stick a bolt through there.

There's a post here or on JeepKJcountry about a replacement - a metal axle retaining nut snap thingy from ACE Hardware.

Think it's on JeepKJ....it's a push-on replacement, no modification needed.

I was wrong - it's here:

Stainless steel 1/4" axle snap nut...less than $1.

I know this is an old thread but same thing happened to me a couple weeks ago and the bushing at the Tcase linkage was toast. It just fell apart. If anyone wants to get the correct bushing without buying the whole cable assembly the part linked below will fit an 02 with the 242 tase. I just put one on and it's a perfect fit. Twenty bucks seems pricy for a crappy piece of plastic but it replaces one that lasted 160k so I figured what the heck.
