| Post subject: | Low Oil & "P0420" Code Problem |
Hi guys, So got two issues with my liberty. One, was at a medical conference today and I noticed my check engine light came on. So did the "key" test to get the code - threw the P0420 code. Researched it online, including here, and noticed it is either a cat converter issue or O2 sensor (most likely the first Second question, and actually one that concerns me more now that I researched it a bit too, is that a few weeks after I got the liberty, my oil light would occasionally come on and off. So I checked the oil, it was low, filled her up, and was good again for a few weeks. Then it came on again. Checked levels - couldnt even find markings in the dipstick. Did what I did before and repeat. Well, I've been dealing with the issue for about a year now; I know, I know. Should've taken it in sooner. Guess I'm paying for it now in more ways than one. Well after research, I suppose that it could either be the sensor, pump, or some-type of leak I suppose. Oh I should mention that I have not been able to find an apparent leaks or notice any pooling underneath the car after it's parked for the night. Also, I recently, about 2k miles ago changed oil and filter. Reading into those other threads, seeing the sludge buildup is a challenge and could lead to a new engine, which nobody wants nor I'm willing to invest into a 2002 model with 170k on it. When I bought it last year, its carfax was clean and maintained appropriately. So ideas and opinions before I take it in? Trying to get some ideas so I don't get ripped off not being a mechanic type. Any input welcomed - thanks |

Your burning oil and it's killing the cats, your 2nd issue caused your 1st issue. At this point to fix it right you'd need to have the engine rebuilt and replace the cats. For the cat's any exhaust shop(find recommended ones from emission centers),OEM cats are best but yes very expensive. Also if one's going the other is not far behind so replace both(actually 3 in a '02 KJ).But 1st get the oil burning issue fixed 1st before replacing the cats or you will just ruin the new cats. |

Hmm "engine rebuilt" - what can I expect that to run me roughly. Is this a few hundred to a grand thing or a 5k+? |

To have rebuilt expect $3000-$4000,having a remaned engine installed expect about the same price but will have a warranty,or have a used engine installed but that price can vary widely from $1500-$4000 depending on used engine price and if any work is needed.Since you have a '02 there will be more expense to make a newer and cheaper 3.7 work since the cam/crank tone rings have to be swapped out and that means engine teardown on both engines. |

Wow. Well not what I wanted to hear, but thank you for the help and input. Looks like it's time to make a big decision. |
