Post subject:  Q: Y Link & Rear Tortion Bar (Sway bar)

Hi,

I finally got my Y link fitted yesterday, but have a problem. The KJ was at the mechanics having the rear Arms Upper bushes changed, so they took the rear tortion bar off and at the same time fitted the Y Link. When it cam to re fit the the rear tortion bar it wouldn't go back on without touching the Y Link!! I know a lot of you run without it and i don't have a problem doing the same but I would like the option to re fit it keeping the Y Link, any suggestion? What about fitting some spacers on top of where the bar it attached on the rear arms to lift it so I can re fit it? Anyone done that?

Do you mean the sway bar that runs side to side?
Not sure how it could be hitting , what all was changed out?
I mean if they removed it to R&R the rear tri link, everything would just bolt right back in the same way if they are installing it right

Tom,

yes I mean the rear sway bar, it just would not go back on and once on it was fauling the Y link. They didn't remove the reartri link, that stayed in place. The Jeep was up in the air then, but that should have not made a difference when they went to rebolt it on. All they had done was remove it so they could get better access to the rear arms to swap out the bushes that connect the Arms to the body. At the same time they fitted the Y link as the bar was off and they had easier access.

Any ideas why it would not go back?

Hi,
Did a bit of digging around the forum, looks like once you have fitted the Y Link the Sway bar won't go back on as it is, so here is my question, has anyone fitted a spacer on top of the rear arms so to be able to fit the Sway bar back one? if so how tall they you do them? I just want the option of Keeping the Y Link and fitting the Sway bar on again for when I need to tow.

Thank you,

Fil.

I can't remember what forum it was on but the solution was to install washers between the lower control arms and the sway bar to eliminate contact between the sway bar and the link extension.

However, there really is no reason to install the sway bar again as it truly is a useless component on the rear suspension. As TomMudd and tjkj2002 have noted in other threads, the sway bar doesn't prevent sway because the bar is bolted to the lower control arms but not to the body or other fixed point. The sway is controlled by the front sway bar (take it off and go around a corner at a moderate pace - THAT will put stripes in your shorts!) and the rear sway bar is just added weight.

So Fil, there is a solution to the contact between the bar and the link extension but I'd suggest you just remove the sway bar and enjoy your KJ without it.

The rear sway bar isn't there for nothing. When I ran without one, the vehicle felt noticeably less stable especially when towing or making lane changes on the highway. I went without one for a while with no disasterous consequences but ultimately decided it was better with it on. Your mileage may vary.... I fabricated my own y link extension to get the boomerang to run level when the jeeps at ride height. To get the swaybar to work with it, I made spacers out of flat plate steel that go between it and the control arms.
