Well its a little more complicated than just hitting the brakes. If i am traveling forward, stop, go in reverse, and hit the brakes i get a fairly loud clunk. If i then put it in drive, move forward, and hit the brakes again I will get another clunk. Both times it is from the front end. I will not get another clunk until I change direction(forward/reverse) and hit the brakes. Is this the ball joints that I keep hearing about? The couple of times I had the jeep in the air I did not notice and play in the wheels.

Sounds like it could be the calipers or the caliper mounts. Definitely the brakes. :2cents:

Check the bolts holding the caliper on... I had this happen once for a while and simply ignored it... UNTIL one of the bolts came completely out.. I braked and the caliper slipped off the disc and started grinding on the inside of the wheel.. sounded exactly like a "Clunk"

Sounds like the same thing I had going on last fall while I was in Moab. I had the front tires off on the side of the trail checking the brakes. It seemed like the clunk was in the front and it just felt like it was the brakes. I ended up in the parking lot of a parts store with the front of the jeep up on jack stands looking for the problem.I knew it would not make the 850 mile trip home. What I ended up finding was in the rear drive shaft rear u joint had a lot of play. It would clunk every time I would slow down or speed up. Just something to check. I would not wait, if the driveshaft u joint goes out at highway speeds it could cause major damage. Same with the brakes both are easy to check just takes a few minutes.
