| Post subject: | Dragging Front Brakes |
ART Cryo Rotors, Porterfield R4S pads, rebuilt calipers, new lines, 2 years/20K miles ago, new flexible lines, sliders lubed and free, pin sleeve deleted. Put Jeep on lift. Rear wheels spun freely. Fronts could not be turned by hand. Cracked one caliper bleed screw and closed. A little fluid dripped out, no squirting or air released. That wheel spun freely. No effect on other front. Cracked the other side with the same result. Drove a little and rechecked. Rotated by hand, but with more drag than I would like. Power bled about 1.5 qts through all four corners. Drove some more. Jacked up left front. Rotates by hand, but with more drag than I would like. Problem seems to be limited to fronts, only. Seems master cylinder would affect all four. ABS unit? Any thoughts would be appreciated! DOC |

Bad calipers, bad lines(internal problems),,bad master, and bad ABS pump can all cause this issue.Though the fronts will turn a bit harder then the rears when the wheels are at full droop due to the CV axles,no CV angles to deal with in the rear axle. |

I would re-install the deleted pin sleeves. the pin sleeves allow the brake caliper to float on the brake pins. when the caliper can float, the brakes can release after they have applied. |

There are a number of causes for brake dragging. Flexible brake line internal deterioration, bad caliper, or in my case, the PO did not "fit" the pads and they bound. The cure for this is preventative action at install. The metal stamping of the brake pad has "fingers" that ride in a grove. I have been finding that I need to file to get no resistance as the stamping tolerances suck. A slight amount of slop is IMHO optimal. It could be a combo platter of these issues. |
