Will installing a Powertrax no-slip rear locker and a Detroit clutchless limited slip in the front negatively affect the ESP programs? I know that the ESP stuff senses one the wheel that is spinning faster than the otherside and puts the breaks on it. But when you are going around a corner you want a front wheel to spin faster than the other one. I'm concerned with the ESP working against the lockers. Does anyone have an '06 and lockers? Wouldn't you use lockers in low range? If so the ESP turns off. I think you can turn it off manually too with the switch on the top of the steering column. I am not yet an off roader though so I may be all wet. |

I am not yet an off roader though so I may be all wet. It doesn't matter if you are in low range or not. The lockers I listed can't be "turned off". Yes, you can turn off some of the ESP programs by the button on top of the steering column but you have to do that every time you start the vehicle. That would be a pain in the rear. |

Even though you guys/gals are on the "DRY SIDE" it might be cool to start a regional L.O.S.T group for us Washington folks...... Oh and on the lockers, I am not sure about how it would affect the ESP but It would be fairly easy to wire in a relay set-up that would set the ESP to off upon startup. In the Dodge world some guys did that with their Overdrive buttons so they would be in the OD off mode by default. |

There seems to be a not too active group already that are Puget Centric. I am game but I have a long way to go before I tackle deep holes and deep mud. I am sure there are some interesting places to go around Cle Elum, Twisp, Lake Chelan. It would be fun. Since there is already one we would need to pick a new name. How about the L.O.S.T. Dixie Lee Ray Club (inside joke |

First Woman Gov. in Washington..... Was she like our present Governor??? I am too young to really know about her but have heard people make reference... BTW, I voted for the guy that actually won the election. |

I should put up photos of Christine, Dixie and Mike Lowry and have folks vote on which is the most ugly. They say that people tend to take on the looks of their pets. Dixie raised pigs! Me, I look a little like a Polled Hereford. |

doesn't affect it at all. Have one in rear, no issues. Don't even bother asking how it works |

I am not yet an off roader though so I may be all wet. The ESP can never be turned completely off even in 4low and pushing the "off" button. In 4low it automatically switches to a semi-on mode which disables the stability control and the traction control allows the wheels to spin more before it applies the brakes. Has worked very well for me in mud and sand where you need a bit of tire speed to "dig" yourself out with the tires. I would suggest just wheeling with the ESP for a while before you choose to get lockers. I have seen a couple of Land Rovers with just their traction control complete parts of the VA regional rock crawling course with no lockers and just the factory traction control. The Discoverys followed right behind Rubis and other TJs that were fully locked. Also the ESP is less 'harsh' (for lack of a better word) on the drive train than a locker. A tire up in the air spinning, for instance, with a locker when that tire hits the ground and gets traction bits have a tendancy to go boooom... Makes for great spectating though!! Just some food for thought for ya. As usual YMMV...... |

So can the factory traction control apply the brakes on the spinning tire that may be in the air or something and apply power to the one with traction? I never thought about it in an extreme offroad condition.... |

Well I can say this much for sure... My wife has a Jeep with ESP and TCS on it, and if you flex the Jeep and lift one rear tire off the ground it totally disables the Jeep and you go no where. Doesn't act like a locker at ALL. |

If you want to disable it all you can just pull the ABS pump fuse under the hood, no? I did this a few times this winter just so I could wip a few shitties, I think it worked fine for me. |

Right, definitely not like a locker which would immediately get the power to the tire on the ground. In situations like slow rock crawling where I don't want much wheel spin at all I will switch back to 4 high range to get the fully engaged ESP. In 4low with the ESP partially engaged you definitely have to give some throttle to get the ESP to kick in. It's not the ultimate system by any means but it does get the job done. Have gone places (mud and sand) which definitly would have stuck my XJ which had a rear LSD and similar tires to my KJ. Do miss that XJ though... |

| Post subject: | NoSlip |
Hello all, Still new here so I want to say hi to everyone and also thanks for all of the profound information on this site. It's been a lot of help to me so far. KJJeepGirl's gotta great question here, and I don't really think it's been answered completely yet. For instance, if you have a limited slip in the rear (NoSlip from Powertrax for example), with the ESP on and in 2 wheel drive, what's going to happen when you quickly go around a turn on a wet road, and accelerate just a little too much? Will the ESP kick in and work like it's supposed to, or with the LSD override the ESP and spin you around in a ring? In contrast, when you're off-road and in 4WD HI or LOW, what's the ESP going to do? The rear LSD is supposed to provide equal traction to both rear wheels, and the ESP is supposed to apply the breaks to that wheel/tire when it begins to slip. So, which comes first? If the ESP does not allow one of the rear tires to spin for as long as it takes for the LSD to kick in, does the LSD ever even have an opportunity to perform its intended function? Or, does the ESP kick in once both tires have equal traction, provided by the LSD, and are spinning and render the rear end (and similarly, the entire KJ) completely helpless? Hopefully, I'm overthinking this, and someone has a simple explanation, but otherwise can someone correct my line of thought. Thanks in advance for any insight anyone can offer, Kraig, (LibertyinPA) |

Thanks in advance for any insight anyone can offer, Kraig, (LibertyinPA) Well, LS is not even offered on the 06's so it doesnt matter. I do not think a locker will hurt a thing. All a locker does is make both wheels spin. When one wheel is getting less torque, the locker kicks in. If both wheels start to spin then esp is going to brake both of those wheels keeping you from spinning which could keep you from getting anywhere. ESP is nice for on-road driving, but off-road I do think it would get in the way. |
