Post subject:  2006 KJ CRD EVIC Questions

Ok - I've read lots and lots and lots about the background on installing an EVIC into my 2006 CRD. I think I got the right unit, supposedly a pull from a 2006 KJ. Bearing part number 56010520AE.

Bad news is it came with no pigtale; so I'm looking at trying to use the "floppy power plug" trick; but I can't find any pictures nor anything which details how exactly such a thing should be wired. I did find a couple posts detailing a left->right pin order of:

Blue/Black-Green/Pink/Violet-Yellow where the Blue is a switched +, Black is ground, Pink is a fused +, and Yellow is the PCI connector.

Unfortunately I'm a bit unclear on the orientation of left->right as it relates to the connector. Near as I can tell this has 4 pins in a row and no indicator as to which is pin 1 and which is pin 4.

So I tried connecting this the way I thought best to the OBDII connector to try; got no response from the EVIC, and a no bus message in my odometer. Hm.. ok. Maybe I'm backwards? So I reversed my wiring and try again. This time the odo is happy, and I did catch out of the corner of my eye for a half a second the EVIC light up. Then the EVIC went dark. And nothing further.

Repeating the experiment and still no response from the EVIC.

Now the question (as I fear I may have fried it) - is there a way to bench test one of these units? If power is applied to the switched and fused + and the unit grounded with the PCI lead left open should it light up?

Basically at this moment I'm wondering how I verify that the unit itself is sound and/or my home-made pigtale/wiring is ok?

Many thanks for any suggestions!

Go to your local u-pull junk yard, drop the evic from a grand Cherokee, caravan, 300m, or any other post 2003 Chrysler product and grab the pigtail ;-)

I have had them wired backwards before during installs, none have fried out... Not saying it can't happen but I haven't seen it yet.

Make sure your ground and two power leads are done correctly 12v constant and acc. Even without the bus connected the unit will power up.

Thanks - I'll see what I can find this weekend and give that a shot. Good to hear that they don't immediately fry if you apply power on the wrong end.

Just a quick note on this - I did grab a few more EVIC consoles, as well as their pigtales from my local pick-n-pull; that let me verify that 1.) my existing console would power up with the proper cable and 2.) in the event that it didn't I'd have an alternative.

That said, with the proper cable (as opposed to my modified floppy connector) the console did power up correctly and is now installed and completely happy in my 2006 Liberty CRD. I know it's highly inaccurate, but I gotta admit seeing the EVIC displaying 32MPG still brings a smile to my face.

Many thanks to those who helped.

...by the way, if you need an EVIC from/for a 98-04 Grand Cherokee PM me. I've got two, one with homelink and one without; also two of the trim panels around one with a sunroof switch and one without. Also ended up with an extra KJ mounting bracket for these consoles.
