I am moving out to Utah here in the next few months and wont be moving a whole lot of stuff. Most of my furniture will be sold to friends and will really only be bringing a dresser, bed, and computer desk as well as the odds and ends that get boxed up around the house.
I priced out a Uhaul box truck and car dolly, and it ended up being nearly $4000 not including 2300 miles worth of gas at <10 mpgs. Woof. So i came up with this crazy idea of buying an enclosed trailer to pull my stuff across the country myself. Checking CL, I found a couple of 7'x12' and 7'x14' tandem axle trailers with electric brakes for ~$3000. I figured that even if I decide not to keep it, I can at least resell it and recoup some or most of my money once I get there.
Now I know that the weight of the trailer shouldn't be a problem, however, my concern is with the aerodynamic forces at highways speeds as literally the entire trip will be I-90 and I-80 except for about 10 miles. And i don't just mean dragging it through the air, I also mean side to side with cross winds and 18 wheelers. Is a trailer this size to much for a liberty to keep in line? I would be using weight distribution and sway control of some kind.
Thanks
I have a 6X10 that I have towed from Ohio to Florida and Ohio to Boston plus 1000s of miles around Ohio .
Yes the thing will drag ya down some, I have never been bothered by trucks or cross winds as long as you load them right they pull well.
You'll need to keep the overdrive kicked off most or all of the trip and of course will use more gas . Mine drops about 4 MPG at least when I have a load in mine .
