Post subject:  Superskid bolt question

I think I stripped the head on one of the front bolts on my Superskid II a month or two ago while I was changing my diff fluid. What size/type of bolt do I need to replace it?

Also, while I'm asking about tranny skids, what do y'all do about changing the oil? Do you take the skid off? Try to get a funnel in there? Just let the oil try and drain out and clean up the mess later?

Thanks guys.

I do regular oil changes with the Superskid in place; if that's what you're talking about.

I found after some hard trails that the SSII front bolts were jammed up into their nutcerts. Basically stripped. What you can do in that case is remove the nutcert by tapping it out of cross piece, drilling a hole through the member and using a nut/bolt/lockwasher combo to attached the plate. Go to NAPA and get the toughest grade bolt they have.

This is the best idea, thats what I did with the stock mopar skid on my 04. I used grade 8 hardware.

Jeepster,
What size hardware did you use and how big of a hole did you have to drill in the cross member to get the nut and washer in there?

Hmm... They were 3/8in bolts with a locking nut for sure, Im not to sure on the length. For the stock mopar tranny skid, I got some 3" bolts to go through the engine skid and engine cross member. For the tranny/tcase cross member, I believe they were 2.5in bolts. Make sure you get grade 8!

I took the old bolts to NAPA and found some #8s just like it but about 3" long. Best advice is to go ahead and ready the hole then figure out your length. I added washers and etc. You'll also get an idea of the drill sixe from the bolt you pull.

OK, I get it now, you drill up through the original hole, to the top of the cross member, then put the nut up there. I thought you drilled a hole from the side, large enough to put a nut and washer inside the cross member. Thanks everyone.

...and you actually can knock out the nutcert that's already in there and that'll create a pilot hole for you. But, yes, you are correct.
