| Post subject: | Help identifying a rattling noise? Crd front of engine |
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide. I have an 05 crd liberty, and am hearing a fairly loud rattling noise from the front of the engine compartment. Few weeks ago had an idler roller die and replaced it, and the serpentine belt seems to be running smoothly with no jumping around. I'll try to get some video of mine tomorrow, but happened to find a video online of EXACTLY my noise. As you can see I've asked that uploader for advice, too. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DclMo04EGLM For what its worth, it also "clanks" or rattles one or two last times as the engine is shutting down / off. Any guidance would be so welcome! |

Take the serpentine belt off and start the engine. if you still have noise it's in the engine, or something loose banging off the outside (unlikely) If you don't, have noise. Operate/manipulate the pulleys individually by hand. You will find yor problem. |

^what this guy said. Mine had a rattle for a while. It was the fan pulley bearing shot. The bearing went down due to a locked up fan clutch being drove like that for a long time. Then it let go and tried to escape from the jeep. The radiator stopped it. Lol |

When I said manipulate them I meant using hand only force, try to wiggle them side to side, use a decent amount of force, but no prying tools allowed. I found a bad waterpump on my gasser this way and subsequently found my coolant loss too! Don't forget to spin them too!! If it makes noise being spun by hand, imagine what it sounds like when tension and the engine running. But.. It doesn't always mean the part is "bad". There is a difference between "bad" and "noisy" and there is a grey area that separates the two. A noisy alternator may do its job for years, or may crap out tomorrow. *shrug* |

^ If using a prying tool larger than a small screw driver to check pulley bearings you might break what your checking. |

I really appreciate all the guidance--I've been down with strep and haven't had a chance to try this yet. When it rains, it pours! I'm going to dig into it this weekend and will follow up with results/updates. |

Give that man a cigar! It was, indeed, the crankshaft pulley/harmonic balancer. Ordered one after reading the other thread (got a new fan clutch, too, just for good measure while I had everything off). Finally had a break in the action today and was able to dig into everything (removed bumper, grill, etc. etc, so that I could shift the radiator, etc. forward and get the fan/fan clutch off). Also--just a note, ran everything briefly with the Serpentine belt off--and the rattle was definitely still there--interestingly, it was perhaps a little worse or more noticeable. Wonder if the tension of the belt helps reduce the clinking a bit, or perhaps the noise of all the other pulleys and fan whirring drown it out. Undid the 4 bolts on the crankshaft pulley, whacked it with a 2x2 (gently enough) and it popped off. Definitely had disintegrated to become 2 separate pieces , with just a couple scraps of cooked plastic/rubber in between. Put the new one on, buttoned everything back together, and--VIOLA!--the clinking/rattle is gone. Vibration is definitely lessened too. I'm so happy to have access to this forum--you guys are the best. Who knows how long I would have been chasing this noise, or paying someone else to do it. Really grateful here! |
