Hey, been lurking here for a while and now have a reason to register and ask some questions... My 04 Liberty, 208k is having some tranny issues. First, it wouldn't move, filter was clogged and I replaced filter and fluid. Now, it slips some and has looked itself in second gear/limp mode. I had pulled codes a day before it went into limp mode and here they are: P0700, P0731,P0846,P0841,P1776,P0732 and P0734. Also a couple evap codes. This Jeep has been submerged for too. With those codes, what do y'all think? I need to get my daily driver up and going again! |

I had disconnected the battery reconnected it, drove it some and the codes P0700, P0733, P0440 and P0700 are now current. Cleared them, Babied it through the neighborhood, slipped a little on the 2-3 shift. Part time light has been on by the way, since I've owned the Jeep. No cel on yet but I imagine it will return if I drive it some more. |

Input anyone? My gal relies on this to take her to class and work 6 days a week really needing to fix it. About to order a solenoid pack and hope it's problem. I've checked the wiring under the rig and it all appears fine. |

With what was your filter clogged? Clutch material? Steel bits? Aluminum dust? I hate to tell you, but that much stuff that your filter was clogged probably means your tranny is on its way out. I replaced mine in my backyard with a tranny from a recycler on eBay with a small warranty. Been great (knock, knock) for the 12,000 miles since. You could do it in a weekend; I took longer becuase I did it myself and took my time - and got distracted doing other maintenance things on the Jeep along the way. |

I have no idea, the fluid was just.. Gray. This Jeep was SUNK hard in a hole. No metal flakes were in the fluid that I could feel and a normal amount on the magnet. I don't have the luxury of doing it where I'm at, I would have to swap a trans in a really understanding friends driveway or something lol. Are the 42RLEs relatively simple to mate back up? Do you know how heavy they are and did you split the transfer case on the install? I'm use to the place on your chest and be a man when it comes to installing trannys. It would drive with the clogged filter, until the the pressure was blocked to the front pump, you could hear it start whining. Shut it off and let everything drop back into the pan and you could go again for a mile or two. |

I did remove the transfer case first, which makes the transmission easier to manhandle. However, I'm not sure I'd lay it on my chest....with coupons and on sale, I got a cheap tranny jack at harbor freight for about $45. Yes, it was easy to mate back up. |
