Post subject:  Need instructions for removing and installing clockspring

Hello all -

I'm having trouble with the radio controls I installed years ago. I took my liberty to a Jeep tech and he thinks the problem is the clockspring.

There's no way I'm paying $200ish for a new one, but I found one on a yet unmolested liberty with audio controls at the junkyard. The guy said I could have it for $10!

My question is how do I remove it without damaging it and install it correctly in my liberty.

I already know how to get to it and have the tools, what's next?

Thanks a lot

Be careful during installation. The factory manual gives bad wrong directions for installation that will destroy your new clockspring on your first test drive. :grim:

Basically the clockspring needs to gently be centered before installation with the wheels straight ahead. There's a small window and a blue marker to help center the tape-wires within but you'll be OK if you count revolutions (gently) from stop to stop, divide by two, and turn it there; wheels straight ahead.

:grim: The factory manual says to turn another revolution after the blue marker shows up in the window. :furious: Don't do that. :dizzy: It will break. :banghead:

I needed a steering wheel puller to get the steering wheel off.

Thanks for the information. How do I remove the one at the junkyard without messing it up?

Pretty easy. Undo top and bottom of steering column cover. Disconnect plug and remove wiper/signal switch. Disconnect yellow airbag plug. Unbolt airbag and remove. Remove steering wheel. Unplug and remove clockspring.

I think that's about how it goes. Been awhile. Second puller borrowed from O'Reillys worked.

Installation is when you need to be careful and ignore the book. I followed the book and got the "crinkly" sound first time I drove away.

They sell a lot of clocksprings. Part of the "Chrysler hates customers plan".
