I notice my lifters are knocking pretty bad. The 4.0 I have on my 2000 TJ sport with 23,800 miles sounds a lot softer than that. Is it just the 3.7 that has noisy lifters or do i need to get it checked out? I have about 4,000 miles on the KJ. I have never opened it up. Any suggestions?

thick oil
it may sound strange but my TJ does it when i start the egine and it has been sitting in the cold for a long time
like 3 or 4 days try a "winter" oil i talked to a mechanic about my TJ and thats what he said
if you look in the owners guide it will sugest 2 different oils one for cold and one for warmer temps but im in the south so i cant use the thiner oil because it could be 30 one day and three days latter it could be 80 so i just went with the winter oil and it seem to helps
my wifes KJ has, however, never knocked and we only put 10/30 in it nothing special it has 32K on it and the TJ has 34K
so go figure??
if its going to be cold for a while i would go with the thiner oil and see what happens

Hmmm.... My dealer put 5w-30 in my KJ when I had the oil changed last week... My 3.7L is quiet.. No noise.. Purrs like a kitten.. Maybe going to 5w-30 is better..

I use valvoline 5w-30 with Mobil 1 oil filter. It stops knocking hard for a couple of days and starts right up again. The problem probably I drive around town too much or something. I am going to the dealership to check this out because in JU someone told me that if it was built in 8-05 it has a common a problem like that and mine I think was built in late 7-05 so that gets me thinking to best to go get it checked out.

I had thought I had a bad lifter, or a burnt valve, the thing was ticking like crazy, after I used some Techtron to clean the fuel system. And it happens sometimes after I use Shell gas. It turned out the injector was pounding away. I put some Marvel Mystery oil (old shade tree mechaincs trick) in the gas the ticking or knocking went away. The KJ's with the 3.7 will have a rod knock when started after a long sit, or sometimes after the oil change. This does bother me. And all the 4.0 I have listen to lately have a lifter knock.

Yes! I changed my oil one day and it knocked VERY loud for the first couple of seconds. Scared the crap out of me. I decided from that day on that I am going to put oil in the new filter before I put it on to help keep down a dry start.

For some reason Ive heard a very light knock after it did it that one time, I really hope it didnt hurt anything. I do not remember it ever doing that before that oil change. Im glad I have the 7/70 power train. Be sure to keep all your receipts!

"oil starvation" is the primary reason for this on a normal healthy engine

Normal starvation is caused by dirty oil, too thick viscocity. Or if your oil is clean...
It could be your oil filter (too many reasons to explain), Whats everyone running? A good oil filter is vital.

A "Best" filter can be had by Baldwin, Hastings, or Amsoil can relieve that. (worth every dime)

Filters to avoid could be: Fram, double, & extra guard / penzoil / Q-state / or any derivatives of, provided and marked as "dealer" filters. There is no way to know who makes the dealer filter until you trace it, or cut it open and look at the design. Anything made by Allied Signal, Inc has no quality production standards.

Purolator,Wix, NAPA,Motocraft, & AC-Delco are decent and usually made by wix or purolator. The Mobile 1 is probably the best filter in this class but more expensive.

Un-normal starvation is when the ports are clogged, probably because of a bad oil filter, but then its a unhealthy engine.

If you have to make a $$$ choice, skimp on the oil rather than the filter.

JJsKJ will be glad to sale you an amsoil filter.

Looking at replacing the lifters/lash adjusters on my 06 Liberty 3.7L. Any recommendations on which brand? Melling? Sealed Power? Mopar?
I also read on a mopar hotrod forum that there is a Ford rocker arm clip that will fit on the jeep rocker arms:
http://www.ford-trucks.com/tsbs/fulltex ... no=00-26-1
Did anyone ever try installing these?
