Post subject:  OME shocks after three months killed?

Hi guys,

actually i´m in slovenia for a roadtrip and today i destroyed my two front shocks (yes Old Man Emu). I´ve built the OME suspension three moths ago in, before i went on my roadtrip to croatia.

Now i´m searching for the reason of the destroyed shocks.... :x

Any ideas? My theory is, that the HD springs (Old Man Emu) in the front are too strong for the shocks, if there is not permanently a extra load in the front of the car (steel bumper, winch and so on).

bye,
samse

Have never seen that before and we install the OME 927s with their OME shocks all of the time, with and with out bumpers
Did you have bumpstops in?

Hi tom,

thx for your fast answer, no, i don´t have bumpstops in yet. not in the front an not in the rear.

i´ll check at the morning if i can find some scratches or contact signs at the bumpstop cup:

i thought, that the hd springs will never get so much compressed w/o extra load....

Was your swaybar installed? I never could get my HD springs to compress enough to touch the upper arm to the bumpstops without disconnecting the front swap bar. Once I disconnected the bar they would touch pretty easily.

Update after i finished my tour through slovenia:

if someone whips the front up an down an i take a look between the springcoils at the shock it seems that the upper shock mount (picture) is broken ->

Image

What the hell! Why?? i checked the mount at the suspension installation three months ago an there was not really rust on it.... the KJ was imported by myself from greece, so the complete car is nearly rustfree.... :? :?

So, maybe the shocks are still ok... :?: :?:

i dont think there are any "HD" part for upper shock mount, ive seen the rubber separate on them , from age, replacements shouldn't be very hard to find though

An OEM replacement is not hard to find, but will it hold or break after the next offroad trip? Usually i try every broken part to replace with an HD one, even if it cost me more or is a custom-made item... 8)

I had to replace both of my stock upper mounts shortly after I lifted mine. They both broke...one a few hours right afterwards. The other one, I thought was ok after inspection, but it broke when I was way way wayyyyyyyyyy offroad but I limped it home.

I have since put ~25,000 kms on them without any problem. Mods below.

You need a wall mounted (professional, at a mechanic's garage) spring compressor, or an excellent quality home use one (I suggest at least a 5 ton) to release the tension, then remove the bolt on the top, (might need to hold the rod from spinning, use locking pliers with something to protect the surface) then replace the whole top mount. Pretty simple.

I assume you know how to remove the spring assembly it do you need help with the process?

Hmmm, yes.... i think so, maybe....

my two OME suspensions (at the 2.8CRD and the actually 3.7) were installed by myself -> viewtopic.php?f=3&t=83170

it would just be fine if you have a blueprint of your custom-made top mount, this would save me time at the repair.... :D

Lol OK you're fine!

It's not custom, it's OEM! Nothing fancy.

its a 1/4" thick plate that slides over the bolts in the top strut mount before the strut assembly is bolted in

they look like this

Yeah, I bet your shocks are just fine. I have beat mine severely with higher speed off road and lots of heavy towing. They feel same as they did 2 years ago. That's lame your mounts broke :furious:
