Hi Everyone,

We recently bought our first Jeep -- a 2006 Liberty 4x4....We really like it.

We have two issues, however.

The check engine light came on yesterday. Tried tightening the gas cap and it's still on. I've tried to retrieve the codes by turning it to Run 3 times, but only the mileage shows in the odometer section. Also read that you may need to hold down the odometer button while doing that, but that didn't work either. What am I doing wrong? Can you get codes on an '06 Liberty without a scanner?

Thanks so much....

MJ

Never heard of retrieving codes without a scanner. If you don't have access to one, I think your best bet would be to go to your local auto parts store. Most will scan for free because it's an opportunity to sell you parts. Auto zone, orielly, pep boys just to name a few

To be honest with any old car you should really have a code scanner on hand. You can get the cheapest form from pepboys for around $20.00. If tend to like technology you can now buy bluetooth code scanners that plug right into your odb port and you can read codes on your android phone! I have one of these and its great. It can also read data from individual sensors if you're into that sort of thing.

1. Cycle the ignition key On - Off - On - Off - On within 5 seconds.

2. The odometer will show the P-code for the corresponding Diagnostic Trouble Code number.

3. If no DTC's are present, the cluster will display either:

A. "P1684" and "done"
B. Or, only "done"

Maybe not doing it fast enough?

Thanks, everyone.....

Turns out you can't get codes without a scanner on the 06....but you can on most others...

Thought of buying a scanner, but found out Autozone scans codes for free.....turns out it was indeed gas cap related, going to have to replace it since tightening wasn't enough....
