Post subject:  possible way to prevent ball joint failure

I found this link somewhere , probably here at LOST.

http://www.moogproblemsolver.com/downlo ... iberty.pdf

If you read the document it indicates there is a pocket that water can get into the ball joint, it is easier for me to have you look at the PDF than try to describe this in words ( a picture is worth a thousand words ).

I was thinking what if we put a bead of silicon or something to keep around the control arm surface to keep moisture out.

Thoughts comments?

I had thought about sealing that area with RTV or something also, and I think it would help some. However there is a high failure rate even for those who don't go through a lot of water. I heard that part of the OEM ball joint is made of some kind of plastic, has anyone checked out a failed one to see?

It would be difficult to get silicone/sealant to stay in place and seal. You will find water contamination in almost every type of ball joint drawing dirt, salt & corrosion into the joint. The solution is a greasable joint, not just for better lubrication but refreshing the grease on a regular basis forces out the water and impurities that damage the joint. It's not rocket science. Moog has the solution. This is nothing short of bad engineering on DC's part, especially knowing how and where Jeeps get driven. DC should know better and will likely pay the price in the long run. WTH, given what I've seen of this Jeep's maintenance schedule, what's a couple of shots of grease on the list going to harm?
