| Post subject: | Switching Carriers |
I have a friend that has a open rear diff, and I have the factory Trac-Loc in mine. I want a real locker (Power Trax) and he want's an LSD. Since mine is new, he offered to buy a Power Trax and trade me mine. If we get a Power-Trax for an open carrier, could I use his carrier in mine, and swap mine out to his? Would we need to go to a shop to have them change it (adjust lashing and such), or would it juse be a switch of carriers and gears? |

Nate, Make the trade, if the are both 8.25's. The power trax, at least when I got mine didn't have a unit for the limited slip diff. I am under the impression that all the 8.25 parts will swap between years and types, except for the early 2002's due to the drum brakes (unless you want drum brakes in the back, than you can swap them too) Al |

There IS a different Powertrax for the LS carrier vs. the open carrier. Should be P/N -2905 for Open and P/N 2925 for Trac Lok Double check on that before ordering. |

Al, we are not switching out the whole rear end, it would only be the carriers. By my uneducated guess would be that even though they have the same gear ratio, when switching the carriers with an open (will have the powertrax in it) to LSD and carrier, they wouldnt line up exactly and the lashing and stuff will need to be reset by a trained person. So Al, you are telling me that you wanted a powertrax, but couldn't get one for the LSD carrier, you got a non-LSD carrier and just stuffed the powertrax in the open carrier, and then just replaced carriers in the diff? |

He wants my Trac-Loc and I want a PowerTrax. It would be easier if he just ordered a PowerTrax for an open diff to put in his carrier, and then switch carriers so he has my LSD and I have his Open with PowerTrax. Will this mess up the lashing, pinion depths, etc that i would have to have a pro do the installation? |

Yes, because you're switching the carrier with the ring gear attached, you'll have to reset the backlash on the gear. |

Unless something is majorly different between the two--besides the Trac-Lock, and you are doing the work yourself. It might be cheaper to just swap out the entire rear end. You could install the locker while on the bench instead of while crawling around under the jeep. And your freind just bolts up and goes. Anyone else agree? Remember I said Cheaper NOT easier. |

correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldn't the housing that had the open carrier need some slight machining to fit the Trac-Lok clutch packs in there? i also agree... swapping the entire rear axle assy. would seem to be much easier... Mark |

Mark We are leaving the Trac-Loc in the Trac-Loc carrier. Adding the powertrax to an open carrier, then switching the whole carrier/locker between two KJ's. |

oh ok... so it's the carrier that's got the machine work done to fit the clutch packs and not the housing... thanks for clarifying |

Yes, Put the Powertrax into his open rear diff and then swap rear ends from his jeep to yours! That would save money and time over having a shop have to reset the gears. |

Haha, thats kind true if you know what you are doing. They will fit just fine, and you must reset the gears as already said. |

I'm with JJ again. You might want to consider any wear patterns too. |

The power trax is available for the Trak lok carrier. Installation is the same with no set-up on the carrier or ring and pinion. Mine had the Trac Lok and after 2 years of hard wheelin' it was shot. It might have well been open before I put the power trax in. The Trak lok is a pile of crap if you are serious about wheelin. (My opnion only). |

So my two options are add the powertrax to his carrier and swap carrier/locker combo's and get a shop to reset the gears/lashing OR Install the Powertrax in his rear end and then just swap axels? (That doesn't sound that simple to me)...hmmm... Well I guess I'll start shopping around at a shop that will do this fo' lil' money... |
