| Post subject: | Mopar front tow hooks |
Can't tell if this has been asked or not before... with the Mopar front tow hook package would I be able to put one of the two hooks on the rear of the KJ vs. both on the front?* Plus the rear hook pkg states "for use without Hitch Receiver", just so I understand; does that mean I can either use the hitch or the hook at any given one time? or if I have the rear hook installed no hitch at all? * if I am able to use the front hooks like that is there any fabrication or extras I will have to get? Still a newbie and trying to figure all this out. Thanks guys. Mike |

If you have a rear tow hook, then you will not even have a hitch on the rear of your KJ. In order to have a hitch on your KJ you can't have a rear tow hook. What some guys (gals too maybe??) have done is gotten the receiver and then put a shackle in place of the tow ball in the hitch to use as a tow point so then they have the hitch for towing and then the option of getting/helping tow others. As far as a front tow hook being able to be used in the rear...I don't think it is possible, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. |

YOu can also just use a receiver pin in the receiver as a recovery point. The shackle looks nice hanging there, though As far as using a front hook in the rear, due to the way both the front and rear hooks attach, I'd say it's not possible. You'd need to be fabbing up a custom mount to do it, and at that point, don't bother paying $90 for the mopar hook, just get a generic hook (or shackle) for $10-$30 and fab up a mount for that. |

You can not use a front tow hook for the back of the KJ. It is a desighn that will not fit, you woul dneed to get a mopar rear tow hook or like Se7enLC said: Quote: As far as using a front hook in the rear, due to the way both the front and rear hooks attach, I'd say it's not possible. I had 3 front tow hooks and was looking to see if the 3rd would fit on the back. It does not fit at all. You would need to fab something to make it work. |

I gotta ask - how did you end up with 3 front hooks?? And for the information of the other people here - you're better off looking for a rear hook. They are much cheaper than the front hooks, because people remove the rear hook when they put on a hitch and sell it, wheras not many people sell the front ones. A rear hook would cost $35-$40 or so, I would think. |

I found a hook that fits in my tow reciever that is rated for 10,000+ pounds for around $20.00 Not bad if you ask me, and the contruction seemed very stout. |

Not bad if you ask me, and the contruction seemed very stout. Not bad at all! I found a receiver shackle for $22 shipped from an online store here: http://www.andale.com/stores/sf_itemHome.jsp?lid=282090678&cid=11582461&mode=1 It's an unknown brand, but it seems pretty sturdy from what I've seen of it so far. |

Se7enLC; the answer to your question is, I bought a set of mopar hooks from ebay and when I got the box and opened it I saw 3 tow hooks insted of 2. I was like, DAMM some one screwed up on this order. |

It's always cool getting something for free.....but it's sad that there's no real purpose for one tow hook. it's not something that's going to get broken, and nobody would want to buy just a single front hook. If it were me, I'd probably be stuck hanging onto it for years, since I wouldn't want to throw away a perfectly good hook. |

Yea tell me about it. I was actually looking to make some kind of mounting plate for the back and try to mount it up undet the frame. If not, I am sure that I could find something else to do with it. |

Thanks guys; I guess I will try for the shackle with hitch vs. rear hook. A part of the reason for me buying the Libby was to tow a trailer so that seems like one of easiest ways for duel function. Mike |

Mopar are the only hooks that will work in the front, unless you want to fab up something yourself for a bracket. And yes, only the hitch, or only the hook. There is nothing wrong with towing off the "emergency chain" clevis on the hitch however. |

Someone mentioned using the receiver pin as an attachment point for a recovery strap. Do NOT do this as the pin could bend and then you will probably have to cut it out. It is made to be inserted into the hole in the bar which actually supports it so it can't bend. The best thing to do is to get that receiver bar and shackle as mentioned above and it is a very good price...........I bought a Warn receiver bar and shackle rated for 10,000lbs (same as noted above ) and I paid twice what you did for it. |
