| Post subject: | Thinking about Ring and Pinion Gears |
Has anyone looked into changing their gear ratios to regain MPG and performance after changing to a taller tire? I was looking at the Ring and Pinion gears by US Gears at rocky-road.com http://www.rocky-road.com/kjdrive.html Any experience or alternate opinions?[/url] |

I noticed your KJ is a 4X4. The thing is, with the KJ's Dana 30A (aluminum) front diff, we can't run regular Dana 30 gears. Only ones specifically made for the 30A. Getting rear gears up to 4.56:1 is easy, but getting the front gears to match is just not possible yet. 4.10:1 gears are available from Mopar, but they are pricey. A few people have gone that route though. The ones from Rocky Road will work for the rear Chrysler 8.25, but not for the front. Rick |

If you're looking to go to 4.10:1, you could try to scrounge some gears, or the whole front diff, from a wrecked 4cyl KJ, if you can find one. Should save you some of the cost of buying them from the stealership. |

The ring and pinion gears at RRO will fit the rear. They will NOT fit the front. We pulled the front diff from a 4 cylinder to get the 4.10's up front on mine. With 29.5" diameter tires, going from 3.73 gears to 4.10's cost me about 3 mpg at interstate speeds, and no difference in stop and go city driving. |

Thanks for all the input. Sucks to hear, but I guess that is the information I was looking for. If anyone has come up with a better or alternate solution than listed above, then post it here for the rest of us. |
