For consideration too from NPS.Gov site

Groups of at least 7 vehicles or 15 participants for common recreational activities (rock climbing, hunting, fishing or trapping, equestrian use, bicycling, street-legal motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle use, backcountry use and roadside vehicle camping).
Application Fee: $5o

Expeditonportal forums also has some great recent write-ups of this trip.

later,mike

Mike... I've been looking for info on the permits you spoke of, can you point me in the right direction?

As soon as we get things worked out I'll be post the trip in another thread. But for now, it seems like a 4 day trip up and back. Plan 2 days and a night on the trail. Start in Barstow, finish in Laughlin. Dates TBA, but it's looking maybe like May 22~25 over Memorial Day weekend. Better info on the trip to follow as we get dates etc firmed up.

AJ

EDIT: Mike... I found the permit information...

http://www.nps.gov/moja/planyourvisit/permits.htm

This can't be right. i haven't heard of any of the groups on the different forums that have run this trail speak of needing them. I'll call them on Monday to see what's up.

Here is a teaser pic I lifted from the "Expedition Portal Forum" on a trip they made on the Mojave Road over New Years. Way cool with the snow!!!

Vern, Mike... have you guys come up with a date for this trip that is agreeable to the both of you? I believe we were talking about Memorial Day Weekend???

I just got off the phone with the Mojave Wilderness NPS and the Barstow BLM Office.

There are no fees or permits required to run this trail "IF" we limit our group size to no more than 6 vehicles and 14 people. So let's firm up the dates and I'll post up another thread for this run. If by chance we get a larger turn out, we can break them down into smaller groups.

I've have a couple of guide books about the trail on order, once I get them... maybe whoever is interested can meet someplace centrally located to everyone and lay out the plans for this trip.

If you guys want to double check the information on permits, here are the phone numbers I called:

- Mojave Wilderness Area of the NPS... (760) 252-6100
- Barstow BLM Office... (760) 252-6000

AJ

Great!!! Let us know when you know for sure. As stated elsewhere, group size is limited to 6 vehicles and only 14 people. If we get more, we'll have to break it down into more than one group. I'll put you down for a maybe in the other thread.

Something we may want to consider before undertaking this desert adventure... a pre-trip meeting to iron out the details.

I got my Mojave Road Guide Book and have been reading it along with the Wells description of the trail.

A few things to consider...

- all the books give directions East to West... do we still want to run it West to East?

- while the trail can be run in two days, the Mojave Road Guide suggests three, to allow for more exploring along the way.

- how to carry extra fuel for those without a roof rack.

- food, are we going to get into actually cooking or just doing the sandwich thing? Self heating MRE's are another idea (they aren't all that bad).

- what kind of gear is everyone bringing, can we share so everyone doesn't have to bring everything?

It looks like the So-Ca gang is doing this trip in March... maybe we should get their inputs when they get back.

Anyway, you get the idea... I think a pre-trip is a good idea to iron out the details and logistics of the trip. What do you think?

I'm down with meeting up sometime, maybe the day before the FourPeaks ride in March? I'll post up my camplst, or most likely try to send it to you.

DIRECTION: I personally would still rather run it W to E. After researching it, there doesn't appear to be the major obstacle that would dictate which way it's to be run. I do like the extra day in there to explore.

GEAR: I'm working on a spare tire carrier, if that's the case, i'll be able to lash down multiple jerrycans of water and fuel on my roof rack. I also have my fridge to keep some stuff cold. I haven't planned a menu yet, but at least on "fancy" meal on the trail would be fun. Yes MREs are useful as are the tuna/ salmon/ chili pack. I usually bring tuna packs for lunch on triails.
Yes if we can consolidate down to 1 stove, camp light (i have both propane and dcell), toliet, etc; it'll greatly help with space.

Hmmm well off to research it some more.

AJ, check craigslist for camp stuff. probably find a decent tent etc for cheap in Phx area. Used sleeping bag, ehhh I might splurge for a new one, lol. I'll see what extras I have laying around too that I can lend you and Mrs AZKJ.

Sounds good. March will give us plenty of time to iron things out.

No problem with running West to East. The Mojave Road Guide is easy to follow and it won’t be difficult to follow the directions in reverse. Yeah, the extra day sounds good, but maybe some folks will have a problem with time off. I think Vern said something that he couldn’t swing the extra time on the trail. if everyone can't get the time off for the extra day of exploring, maybe next year... this year's trip could be a pre-run for maybe what will become an annual AZ LOST Jeeps event... the "Mojave Road Expedition"!!!

Check THESE out. I could install some tie downs just below the fiberglass roof line and be able to tie them down on the roof. They hold 4 gallons each… the weight for two of them is about 55~60 pounds. The JK’s roof should be able to support that weight since the tanks lay flat and the weight would be more spread out than conventional gas cans/containers. Wouldn't you think?

Yeah, at least one good meal on the trail would be really nice. In fact, if folks would like to grill up some teriyaki marinated ribeye steaks, I’d spring for them. Maybe baked potatoes, corn-on-the-cob done Japanese style on a grill, with a soy sauce/sugar concoction (actually it's very good... I used to eat them at street fairs when i was stationed in Japan, they were real tasty). Or, whatever other sides folks can come up with.

I’m going to head over to a couple of the truck stops and see what the trucker’s fridges are costing now days. I had one when I was driving cross country and they kept things pretty cool.

We plan on getting new tents etc, who knows… we may even get nuts in our old age and start doing it, uh I mean roughing it in a tent more often.

Oh, as for pets, I checked with BLM... they have to be kept on a leash the entire time and their mess cleaned up.

So, come on folks… plan some time off. This Mojave Road Expedition has the makings of being a really fun and interesting trip. We can take up to 6 vehicles and 14 people in each group without having to get a permit.
