Post subject:  Trailer brake controller

Hey guys,
Decided after a couple hard stops driving in Tucson last month at FITS that I should probably hook up a brake control system to help stop the trailer a bit easier. The PO installed electric brakes on in so i'm doing good there and with the 7 pin harness.

Any of you trailer haulers have any recommendations on what to use? I really like the Prodigy, but dont think I'll be able to source it locally in time for Mojave. What about the ones they sell at Autozone/ Checkers etc? They are considerably cheaper priced. Also thought i read that the controller has to be mounted horizontal, any truth in that or can it be mounted vertically?

Thanks
Mike

no AJ dont think i'll need jake brakes like your trailers. haha

Prodogy is a good option.
I use a Journey HD in my truck for stopping that 4800# max trailer you haveseen me with.
Furtunately even on single axles the electric braking system basically is all the same.

Didn't even know that AT had electric brakes- that is an extremely good option!

ok on the topic of brake controllers do we need any additional harnesses to hook up to the KJ? i was looking at the prodigy as well and the web site says I need an additional harness. I do have the factory tow pkg.

here they are showing the additional harness install. Do i have to purchase this?

here are the main links:

Do I need all this stuff?

Hey Doc, long time no talkie.

From what I've read, no that additional package would not be needed if you already have the factory tow pkg. I ended up buying(autozone) a trailer brake wiring setup for the extra lengths of wires for the install, but if you have plenty of connectors and wires you'd be fine.

There are four wires on the brake controller. One positive and one negative routed to the battery. One taps into the blue wire under the driver's side kick panel (behind hood latch). The last one taps into the brake light wire (white w/ brown stripe in brake harness above brake) Found it easy to pull the kick panel, the drop panel above the brake/gas pedals, and drop the knee panel under steering wheel to get to everything. hope that helps.

I don't suppose you could be a lil more specific with the blue wire :) all I see is a Big stupid harness next to the hood latch. I did see a white with brown stripe as you said just above the pedals its in a lil harness or bundle or four wires.

yeah i put a "add a line" to the white w/ brown stripe. It was a hurried job, i need to go back and redo it all when i finally get around to ordering my controller (was using buddies).
