It appears the halfway point will be around rock springs. That sounds like a neat possibility to camp and check out

According to my massey book the trail starts at the intersection of yermo road and harvard road south of i-15 at the harvard road exit

What does the wells book say is the start of the trail?

Vern... i don't have the Massey book for CA. I've been planning using the Wells and Mojave Road books. The Massey books are way more detailed, so you may have more information than I do.

My 2 cents gathered from my research:

Wells ends the trail (my planned starting point) at I-15 exit 221, Afton Canyon. It bypasses Camp Cady, Manix Wash and points south. That portion of the trail parallels the highway and train tracks. Getting on the trail at exit 206, Harvard and Yermo Roads, adds 15 miles of dirt. It doesn't seem that scenic or interesting and wastes time we could use for exploring more interesting places farther into the trail.

As for camping... as described by Wells, the trail is 124 miles, give or take.

I've looked at four camping spots, depending on how late it gets...

- Marl Springs is 54 miles into the trail
- Beale Mountain area is at 57 miles
- Mid Hills (a developed site) is 68 miles into the trail and 5 miles south off paved Black Canyon Road
- Rock Springs is at 74 miles
- and of course, primitive camping is allowed anywhere along the trail.

I would presume it would depend on how late it gets as to where we camp, and if we find a good place along the trail that catches our fancy. Keep in mind the first half of the trail has more things to see and do than the second half. Another thought... the second day we don't have to worry about stopping to set up camp, which gives us more time to complete the trail.

I sure wish a few of us would have gotten together earlier, to better plan things out a little more, instead of this last minute internet stuff.

As it stands now, Beth gets out of work Friday at 1500. depending on traffic, that should put us in Barstow 2100~2200 Friday night. Too late to get together for some final planning. We'll gas up and get ice etc. Saturday morning, before meeting up with everyone at 0700 for breakfast, at IHOP. I'm still looking at an 0800 roll out. I guess we can finalize our starting point, camping spot and anything else over breakfast.... :D

I'll say Massey is detailed, I have 118 waypoints for the trip.

OK Afton canyon it is then, talked me into it. I'll pull those gps coordinates out of my route

I agree with your thoughts on camping. More to see on first half so take our time and can afford a longer day on sunday. I vote for primitive camping but we can play it by ear

The main points of interest I have read about are piute creek, rock spring and a petroglyph site at eagle spring I read about on expeditions west

I have a commemorative rock for the rock pile too! I'm keeping the words on the secret plaque at the rock pile secret though. No one can make me tell

I'm staying at the Rodeway inn barstow friday night and harrahs in laughlin sunday night

Add Cave Canyon Iron Road, the Lava Tubes, Rock House Overlook and a few others to the list.

Here's hoping the weather holds out so we can cross the dry lake.

We'll be at the Day's Inn in Barstow Friday night, and will stay in Kingman Sunday night before heading home Monday morning.

Thanks Vern. I've been keeping a close eye on the weather too.

LOL... how many 'different' answers did you get on how much fuel to carry? I'm bringing 7 gals and that should be more than enough to get from Barstow to Laughlin.

The concensus seemed to be an extra 5 is plenty, if any. Got a couple replys from Jeep Expeditions also with the same replys so I'm bringing 5

Yeah, that's what I figure. Five gallons should be more than enough.

Speaking of Jeep Expeditions... here is an article from their adventure through the desert in Oct 2007... it's a pretty good read if you have time.

One thing I noted was, this "easy" trail took out at least three tires. In addition to a fan belt, and an air filter... I adding a couple more tire plug kits to the one I already have.

The article highlighted the remoteness of the area when one of their Jeeps broke down. I also like their 'chuck wagon' concept for their meals....

I'm bringing two spares just in case. Had my belts and hoses checked and they are ok. I may pick up a spare belt anyway just in case
