Hello there All,

I just sold my 98 Wrangler :( due to its poor MPG and upgraded to an 05 CRD which is named Betty (Shes black :D )

Jeep had its timing belt done, and just had 4 glow plugs changed.

Also added Memphis speakers (Which are AWESOME!) and a Pioneer head unit.

Its Eco Tuned, 146k Miles, and so far, pretty awesome. Any advice/anything I need to know about this jeep, feel free to give me a heads up. I'm interested in learning about the maintenance that I'm going to need to do in between dealer visits. Things I have heard about that might improve the performance, up my MPG, and extend the engine life. Things like cleaning the MAF censor, best air filters/oil filters ect.

I'd like to add some black rims, rhino lining along the bottom, and maaaaaybe a 2" lift just for aesthetics.

You might require a modified engine thermostat for cold weather running. Take a look at the following link to another thread regarding the subject...

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=50940

Mark Kapalczynski, the designer of this modification, has moved to Australia and is not taking on any more CRD customers looking for this mod. The KIA SEphia thermostat housing/coolant outlet required for this mod is also becoming scarce. Myself and another Jeff are taking on the project up here in Canada... see the link below...

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=74131

We require CRD engine thermostat cores; if you have one, please send it to me for our project.

Hi and welcome to lost!! As a new CRD owner you found the right place. You just did not post in the correct place. Check out the knob guide " in liberty...love the torque" and ask questions on the same place.

Good luck. These CRD's require lots of maintenance.

It has been my understanding that, if you get the upgrades that should have been in the CRD models from the factory, ( ), then the diesel Liberty is quite reliable and requires little maintenance.

The two biggest beefs I have with my CRDs are the ridiculous EGR system, and the non-existent engine thermostat. Chrysler, of course, has washed its hands of these problems, and REFUSED to provide ADEQUATE AND PERMANENT solutions to either of these issues. :furious: In fact, Chrysler Canada, (I don't know about the U.S.), is not even willing to send out a dealer broadcast to ask their service departments to keep old CRD engine thermostat cores, and then send them to me so we here can modify them for all CRD owners.

I simply do not understand Chrysler's attitude in this regard. They take a great vehicle concept in the Liberty CRD - a small SUV with a turbo-diesel engine - and deliberately kill it with a pollution control system and an engine thermostat that takes away ALL of the advantages of having a turbo-diesel-engine. :banghead: When someone spends the extra thousands of dollars to purchase a turbo-diesel-vehicle, they are expecting...

1) Longevity
2) Durability
3) Lower vehicle maintenance costs
4) Power - read that as torque
5) Fuel economy

We got none of this when we purchased the Liberty CRD as it came from the factory. I think Chrysler knew that this vehicle would be a slug right from the beginning, and they decided to cut their losses right from the beginning as well. I draw this conclusion because any high school automotive student who can walk and chew gum at the same time would realize that you DO NOT engineer and EGR system for a turbo-diesel engine, especially a turbo-diesel-engine with a variable-venturi turbo that has the venturi controlled by a vacuum actuator. IDIOTS! The cool thermostat just makes everything worse. ANY DIESEL ENGINEER will tell you that a vehicle will not run efficiently if the engine never comes up to operating temperature. The engine looses power, fuel efficiency, and reliablility because it is constantly running at a temperature lower than it should, plus the EGR system spews even more crap into the intake system, compounding the problems with P0299 "Check Engine" light issues. I can not believe that Chrysler's engineers did not warn their administrative masters that there would be problems, but they decided to go ahead with the CRD as we have it today anyway, probably because they had already made commitments to V.M. Motori and to customer demands. And now we as customers are left with the headache plagued results of their decisions.

This all means that Chrysler will provide no real customer support, and hope that we as customers would give up in frustration. :ALONE: If this is the way Chrysler treats its customers in order to engender brand loyalty, then is it a small wonder indeed that Mercedes-Benz sold out 4-5 years ago, and how they had to have Fiat bail their corporate butts out in 2009. :dead:

One thing I can not quite understand is why they fell they had to install EGR in the first place? Diesel pollution control laws really did not come into force until 2007, so why rush to hastily engineer pollution control into a vehicle that should not have needed it?

Jeff

Jeff, I think the bigger question is do they want repeat business? :juggle:

If Fiat wants to improve upon or recreate a loyal customer base to build on, why are they not extending the olive branch to existing customers where Daimler Chrysler did not? Do Sergio and the rest of the board not realize customer loyalty/ retention is essential?

Really how tough is it? When Dolts like us have such simple requests like offering improved parts for recalls and service such as...

EGR really? They couldn't find an EPA approved solution? :dizzy:

Torque converter. Really? The corporation already manufactures a superior unit but will not supply it in the recall? Are you brown stinkies!ng me? :5SHOTS:

A non serviceable thermostat ambitiously list priced at $150 REALLY??? :furious:

and the list goes on...

It's a loser for Fiat if current Jeep, Chrysler, and Dodge owners are not happy, not buying and being vocal as to why. If the board has a brain among them, they had better improve the whole organization from the top down as well. Start by firing everyone that has no answers or actions to this simple question. What have you done to improve the customer experience?

To woodtick:

$150.00 for a thermostat? How is this for pain... we pay $207.00!! :ROTFL:

As bad as you guys have it south of the 49th parallel, it is even worse up here...

...fuel injectors that go for $1,550.00 each.
...fuel filters for about $70.00 each.
...shop rates at about $130.00/hour.
...alternators for about $850.00 each, (not installed).

...and the list goes on, and on and on...

You and I have a lot to agree upon, woodtick, and your opinions are insightful. If we were lawyers I think we would have a good case against Chrysler and the unfair way we as customers are being treated by them.

Regarding your comment about Chrysler not being able to find an EPA solution for pollution control that works, and resorting to EGR, I am sure that pollution control was not even required on a diesel Liberty before 2007... or am I wrong about this, (please don't include Kalifornia; I know that their standards are "higher")?

Uh-oh! It just occurred to me that we may be scaring the new guy - Highspeed005 - off... Don't mind us Highspeed... we are just blowing off some steam. :furious: We really do love our diesel Libbys, or we would have given up on them a long time ago.

It just annoys the hell out of us that such a good vehicle that has lots of potential gets saddled with problems that only a rookie car manufacturer would make. Then we get genuinely angry when we are hit with criminally high parts prices, and dealer service departments that treat you with utter contempt; like you know nothing.about vehicles, how they work and how to repair them. I have had my intelligence insulted more at Chrysler dealerships than anywhere else I have EVER done business at, (I swear to God; no foolin').

OH YEAH.... the new guy.

Jeff is right, I do think the diesel in a Liberty platform is very cool. A smaller SUV that stock is off road capable, (to a point) does well in snow, gets something resembling fuel economy, can be parked just about anywhere, can comfortably carry a family of 4, and is a great tow vehicle, despite the short wheelbase.

I also do think it is a safe vehicle, considering I rolled my last one 4x  and walked away. (Thanks to the Guardian Angles) In less than a month I was CRD # 2 as nothing else fit my needs as well (at least not within my budget).

The gripes I, and others, continue to have is that just here on LOST there has been more product support, trouble shooting, part modification/ engineering, and innovation for this vehicle than Chrysler was willing to do. Most of the info here is free for the taking, and corporate is foolish for not taking advantage of it.

As cost benefit analysis regarding repeat business, if Fiat/ Chrysler wanted to make some small changes to the parts available, incorporating some product innovations/ suggestions found on LOST, investing $1,000,000 for an assumed 10,000 units (my guess) still on the road in the US equals $100 per vehicle. Including notifying current owners about some part updates. And I think they can get this done for 1/3 of that.

Wouldn't that be quite the sign of an improved corporate attitude? Sure would make me want to consider a new :JEEPIN: .

Ha, Thanks for the replies guys?

I'm not sure I understood 1/3 of what was posted, but its good to know there are some knowledgeable and enthusiastic individuals on this board. If only someone lived closer to show me WTF I gotta do to maintain this thing on a daily, weekly, monthly basis. No one can seem to agree whether or not this is a high maintenance vehicle or a low maintenance vehicle.

Not to get political, but it seems to me that Jeep did everything right. They built a vehicle just good enough to get everyone to buy it, but just bad enough to require repairs. Isn't that the usual for vehicles? Either way you slice it, I got what I wanted. Well, not really. I wanted a wrangler with a diesel engine, I got a jeep with a diesel engine. I'm getting 24 mixed city/highway with my GDE Eco Tune and that makes me :D a lot more than my 15mpg wrangler did. Although come summer time I will miss the girls checking out the guy with no doors on the highway. (quick side note, a lot of folks are claiming 30+ mpg, but I call bs. If you check out my other post my OD and trip OD are off by about 110 miles PER TANK! GPS confirmed my trip OD is spot on. translation, my jeep with 146k miles may only have 121k miles)

The heater in my jeep doesn't work very well, I am assuming its because of the thermostat and upgrade some of you were talking about? I would like to get that fixed when next winter rolls around.

I consistently get between 20-24 in the city, 28-33 hwy. The lower end on winter blend, higher end on summer blend. Hand calculated off of odometer reading. Keep between 62 and 70 mph on the highway and you'll get that too. I get 19-21 towing my boat down the highway too.

BTW I record every tank of fuel and monitor mpg as this can be an indicator of a problem.

Doug

PS this is also on A/T tires and no lift. No BS! :goink:

Awesome mileage, Doug.

I was having issues calculating my mileage because my OD and trip OD are showing significantly different numbers between fill-ups.

You can read about it here... viewtopic.php?f=86&t=74885

There was a 55 mile difference on 1/2 of a tank. That equals 110mi deviation between the trip and standard OD between tanks. After using a GPS to calculate I am getting 24 mixed driving. My standard OD said I was getting 30 and I knew that was too good to be true.

I urge you to use both the OD and trip OD, then match them up with a GPS to verify those numbers. Even Keith from GDE stated 3-5% improvement, which puts us at about 27.3mpg highway over factory numbers. While 30 is not out of the question, I would blame that on the 8% standard error on the OD. Heres the math...

28mpg* 20gal tank = 560mi/tank... 560*8% deviation of OD = 44 miles... 560-44=516 ACTUAL miles driven (if there is in fact an 8% deviation) 516/20 gallon tank = 25.8 mpg highway.

33mpg*20 = 660mi/tank ... 660*8% = 52 miles ... 660-52=608 actual miles @ 8% deviation ... 608/20 gal = 30mpg.

I digress, back to standard maintenance of the KJs.... anything else I need to know?

Yes I hear you all here.
I have a 06 CRD with just over 137,000 Kms.
Changed the timing belt and the noisy front wheel hubs.
But at least here I get the answers I need.
I read the noob section for new CRD owners.
Very informative I agree its a must read for new members.

Hope you all enjoy your CRD's :JEEPIN:

Ha, I am far from a mechanic. Always wanted to learn, never had the time or instructions to help me learn. Right now cashflow is the problem. If I break something I would be screwed!
