I agree, the odds are they'll never catch you, or even try. However, a lot of people don't know that this stuff is illegal and it's always better to be informed. :)

Oh, and yeah, you do sound like you're from Texas. ;)

Freedom was simply referring to amps.

I'm not just reffering to amps, I'm refering to standalone radios as well.

According to "Clay's" website their tuning service includes "Turning up the Transmitter's wattage" and "Cutting the transmit limiter and/or adjusting the modulation." Both are illegal in the US.

Here's the word straight from the FCC (from 47 CFR 95):

Radio Modification:
Quote:
Sec. 95.425 (CB Rule 25) May I make any changes to my CB station
transmitter?

(a) You must not make or have any one else make any internal modification to your CB transmitter.
(b) Internal modification does not include:
(1) Repair or servicing of a CB station transmitter (see CB Rule 24, Sec. 95.424); or
(2) Changing plug-in modules which were certificated as part of your CB transmitter.
(c) You must not operate a CB transmitter which has been modified by anyone in any way, including modification to operate on unauthorized frequencies or with illegal power. (See CB Rules 9 and 11, Sec. Sec. 95.409 and 95.411.)

Amplifiers:
Quote:
Sec. 95.411 (CB Rule 11) May I use power amplifiers?

(a) You may not attach the following items (power amplifiers) to your certificated CB transmitter in any way:
(1) External radio frequency (RF) power amplifiers (sometimes called linears or linear amplifiers); or
(2) Any other devices which, when used with a radio transmitter as a signal source, are capable of amplifying the signal.
(b) There are no exceptions to this rule and use of a power amplifier voids your authority to operate the station.

Power Output:
Quote:
Sec. 95.410 (CB Rule 10) How much power may I use?

(a) Your CB station transmitter power output must not exceed the following values under any conditions:

AM (A3)--4 watts (carrier power) SSB--12 watts (peak envelope power)

(b) If you need more information about the power rule, see the technical rules in subpart E of part 95.
(c) Use of a transmitter which has carrier or peak envelope power in excess of that authorized voids your authority to operate the station.

Penalties:
Quote:
Sec. 95.421 (CB Rule 21) What are the penalties for violating these rules?

(a) If the FCC finds that you have willfully or repeatedly violated the Communications Act or the FCC Rules, you may have to pay as much as $10,000 for each violation, up to a total of $75,000. (See section 503(b) of the Communications Act.)
(b) If the FCC finds that you have violated any section of the Communications Act or the FCC Rules, you may be ordered to stop whatever action caused the violation. (See section 312(b) of the Communications Act.)
(c) If a Federal court finds that you have willfully and knowingly violated any FCC Rule, you may be fined up to $500 for each day you committed the violation. (See section 502 of the Communications Act.)
(d) If a Federal court finds that you have willfully and knowingly violated any provision of the Communications Act, you may be fined up to $10,000 or you may be imprisoned for one year, or both. (See section 501 of the Communications Act.)

Thanks Freedom, the information you provided was informative. :)

I have a Maxon HCB-10C in mossy oak camo that I use on trail rides. Got it cheap on Ebay.

if you properly tune it and use the right antenna / combinations of antennas, you should get a pretty long range on 4watts. Dual antennas can give you a better forward and backward range without needing to tune it up, helpful on the highway.

Cobra 75W Hand Held.....works great and saves space. Not into the trucker/ham op world, just need a cb good enough for trail use and emergencies in the mountains called the Rockies. This CB works along with my antenna mod.

Dual antennas work best spaced 1/4 wavelength apart - that would be nine feet; anything too far from that and the benefit in signal strength starts to drop. Since the overall width for the Liberty is just a shade under six feet you probably wouldn't see any drastic increase in range. Plus you also have to make sure you are using the same length of coax to each antenna in order to 'phase' them properly. On the other hand, getting the SWR set and using good coax on the installation will definitely help your signal, and make sure if you have a permanent external mount that you do something to keep moisture out of the connections. I won't go into the debate on types of antennas - thats more a personal preference.

i got 12 mile range on my uniden bearcat pc68xl and 5.5 foot fiberglass whip made by hotrod. I also invested in a 20 bearcat external speaker, 108 db radio shack PA, and Bearcat BC350 scanner to pick up cops. you need a quality antenna and you need SWR tuning, its legal and your range will double if done properly. I run 4 watts and no amps. My setup is not cheap, but it is pretty and it works. I use mid-level equipment. If you need more then 12 miles, buy a ham radio. If you want my setup or details on, check my cardomain site listed below.

KJTX hit the nail on the head. If you get a radio tuned up you will increase the range of the radio. When you (Hoss) say tune it up on the Jeep, are you talking about setting the SWRs?

Peak and Tweak? Making it output more power than originally specified is questionable at best :D

4 watts is the legal limit for Citizens Band radio. The Cobra 75WXST already makes 4W, as do 90% of CBs available. If your radio has been modified to make more power or you are running an external linear amp, you're not only breaking the law, you're likely annoying other people as your voice will bleed over to other channels and you could potentially damage radios of people ner you.

Please do the intelligent and mature thing. If you really need more range then get a radio operators license and a 2m ham rig.

If you have a good quality radio, and the expansion and the tune up are done correctly you will not bleed over. One of the problems with a "CHOP SHOP" CB place is they crank up the modulation to far. That WILL cause splatter. If a shop says they can install an internal amp. in your CB...RUN and don't look back. They are junk! They don't have the necessary filtering to keep a clean signal. If a shop does that you really don't want to go there. They either don't know what they are doing or they just look at your $$$....or both.

I run one of the cleanest mobile and base CB's around. In the Jeep is a Galaxy DX-959 with about 140 channels on AM/SSB. It puts out about 3X the power of stock radios. The base is a Galaxy DX-2547 that is set up the same way. These radios set up the way they are will not bleed over channels, unless of course you are VERY close. In that case ANY radio will. As far as damaging another persons radio...it ain't gonna happen no matter what you run. Years ago I ran a station (base) that put out an effective radiated power of 5,000 watts. You could set in my driveway with your CB on and you would NOT damage your radio. You wouldn't want it on, but you could. It was done many times by many people.

As far as 2m and Ham radios goes...I never will. There are as many as* holes in Ham as there are in CB. 2 meters also needs a repeater in order do get an good range. I will say that Ham rigs are a LOT better quality than what is available in CB's.

I get all my CB stuff through the Quack Shack in Washington state. They also have the best CB forum on the internet. One section of the forum is for Galaxy only and has a Galaxy factory technician on it for any questions. Check out the place.

Terry

PS: 5 watts into the finals is the max allowed.

I also run a Uniden Bearcat PC68XL but on the final amp, I had a Galaxy final placed in the radio. Running somewhere around 50 watts PEP.

I bought a Midland 75-822 from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000 ... 77-8708751

It comes with two battery packs, one for rechargables and one for alkalines. You can slide the battery pack off to easily convert it to a vehicle powered handheld with remote antenna. While I hear the stock antenna is pretty bad, I've never had any problems with reception off-road. It's a well built unit.
