| Post subject: | Amp By-Pass? |
B/c I could never find a stock speaker to replace my blown Infinity one...I ended up going to Best Buy yesterday and having both front door speakers replaced. They told me that they had to install a "amp bypass" in order for my rear door speakers to work b/c they were taking out the stock ones. I figured they wouldn't lie about this, but if anyone has any info about doing this themselves then I would feel better about it. And where does the bypass go, on the back of the head unit....or near the speakers themselves? Tnx |

The amp bypass is really the appropriate thing to do. The reason they gave you as you described however doesn't sound correct. The rear speakers would still work regardless of what you do in the front. One reason to do the bypass is that the higher power input you are feeding into the amp from your aftermarket head unit could potentially burn up the factory amp over time causing you to lose all sound. Another reason is that you are probably losing some signal power running through that factory amp. I do not know numbers but I my guess is that the 17-19 watts RMS from your pioneer is probably a little more than the output power of the infinity amp. Did they replace the rear speakers when they did the bypass? It has always been my experience that the Infinity premium speakers were 2 ohm speakers (although I haven't installed professionally for about 3 years). If they did not replace the factory rear speakers, but did the amp bypass, you are potentially going to run into problems if they are 2 ohm speakers. Especially if listening to high volumes of music. You will start to overheat your head unit and you will notice that it will start shutting off its internal amp periodically to cool down. Usually you can jump the amp input wires over to the output wires at the amplifier. Hope this helps. |

The front Infinity speakers have the combination front/rear amps mounted to them. If the front speakers are removed, the front/rear amps are also removed. They had to jump the rear speakers directly to the head unit when they removed the front speakers and integrated amps. While the Infinity front speakers and tweeters are 2 ohms each, I'm pretty sure the rear speakers are 4 ohms each. It sounds like they did the right thing. I've been running my stock Infinity amps after my 70W RMS Alpine amp for almost a year now without any problems. Although, I don't really turn the volume up that high. |

Your stock radio should still work, you just won't have the supplemental Infinity amps anymore. Essentially, your Jeep no longer has the Infinity audio package. I'm sure your new package is better |
