Tweeter upgrade question.

Have the infinity factory system, but am less than pleased with the factory tweeters. Have considered replacing the front speakers with a nice Polk component set, but am not thrilled about having to wire in a new four channel amp just to make it happen. Also I have read that some have done this only to be disappointed by the lack of bass performance from component sets.

I am wondering if just replacing the front tweeters with some 1" polk soft domes is possible and if it works. I just purchased a set of tweeter adapter plates off ebay for $12, shipped. Looking at getting a set of Polk db1000 tweeters, $45 at circuit city, and just swapping them in.

Anybody done this or something similiar?

Any info is appreciated.

It's such a small change, I think it would not hurt. It honestly takes all of 5 minutes to pull the pillar covers off and pop the dash bezel. The hardest part is using the darned right angle phillips driver to pull out two screws from each speaker. There is probably a three inch wide round socket for the speaker.

The only difference is, you would be replacing a 2" paper cone speaker with a piezo tweeter or something. I really don't know what frequency the Infinity dash speakers are crossed at, but since it is a speaker, it may be crossed too low for an actual "tweeter". You may put too much low frequency to the aftermarkets.

I used these as replacements with an amp and they sound awesome. Plus, you can buy a second set of midbasses and run them off the same crossover with a 3db gain.

Posting this as an FYI/follow up.

I replaced the dash speakers with polk db 1000 tweeters, circuit city $49. I purchased pvc adapter plates off ebay for about $13. When the pvc adapter plates arrived, the openings were to small for the polks. No problem, just get a dremel or a drill with a small bit and open those plates up a bit. Upon removal of the dash speakers I noted the crossover, which is nothing more than a capacitor, is attached to the positive wire feeding the dash speaker. When disconnecting the speaker, be sure and remove the capacitor with it. Your aftermarket tweeters, will probably have a simple crossover of their own. Hookup is simple, just be sure and get the positive and negative correct. There is plenty of room off to the sides of the speaker wells for the crossover's.

The results are quite nice. Much more detail and clarity in the upper frequency's. I was concerned about how they would interact since the liberty has the Infinity speaker package, 2 ohm drivers, and most all aftermarket tweeters are 4 ohm. Doesn't seem to be a problem. Still plays plenty loud.

I had been considering an amp and all new speakers. My opinion of the Infinity package is that is way to bass heavy around 100 to 150 hz, and was lacking in upper frequency response. I always had the bass turned down to -5 and the treble up to +6, listenable but not great.

This upgrade has helped with the upper frequency, but bass is still boomy and muddy. Going to live with this set up for a while and then decide if I want to deal with amp, speakers, sub and hookup.

When you do decide to replace everything take a look at Diamond Audio speakers, they sound great. I compete in sound quality competitions with them.

I was looking at the link that shows your setup. Are the speakers you mounted in the modified dash brackets 1" dome tweeters? Or are they a different size? Thanks.

They are 1" tweeters mounted in a modified stock speaker that I cut up to use for a frame
