Why does my cb work sometimes and not others (frequently). Some days it will work fine, many times when I try to transmit it just puts out lots of squelching. My antenna is mounted on a rear tailgate bracket. It only sticks up about a foot or two above the roofline. I have gone through all the wiring and grounding and it seems to be fine.
Any ideas?

It could be that your radio or mic is bad. Also, did you check the standing wave when you installed the radio and antenna? It is likely that the swr is way too high....in which case your broadcast signal is being reflected back to your antenna....and you will burn your radio up.

My advice is to get ahold of a SWR meter and check it...or go to a radio shop and have them do it for you. You might need to adjust your antenna (some have adjustments on the tip) or just get a new one. Or, it could be a bad cable...it could be lots of things. If the SWR is o.k., then I would just try a new radio.

Good luck.

could be a solar flare is doing it, or "skip" which happens mostly early in the morning or late eve. when the F layers are joininig or spliting.

Vern which cb you have again? Cobra 75? The dials on those get gunked up pretty bad. Dan and I both had that problem. He also had problems with his squelching out, maybe he can give some advice. If you have time and can't figure it out, behind the Triple T is a cb shop that I went to. They were pretty freindly guys.
