| Post subject: | NMO Mounts and Headliner... |
So, just last week I passed the Canadian amateur radio exam and received my new call VE3OSF I had been licensed in the U.K. for quite some time. Next up is to get some VHF / UHF aerials mounted to my Liberty, have been looking mainly at NMO body mounts thinking of placing the mount pretty much right in the middle of the roof running the coax down the driver side A pillar and behind the dash. Dose anybody have any experience of running coax under the headliner? How is the headliner attached to the roof, is it glued or held in another way? Josh. |

The headliner is mostly attached around the doors, around the sun roof (if you have one) by the Holly S#$@ handles, sun visors, a pillar moldings... It has a rigid styrofoam ribs around it for structure. No glue i think. |

Thanks, this sounds quite promising. Hopefully I will be able to snake the coax down one of the pillars. Just have to wait now, the break in weather has just come to an end with several inches of snow this afternoon. |

Pull the caps off the bolts, pull the bolts. and pull the a pillar and run the coax. much easier than fishing it. |

Removing the headliner is a pain. I had a bad rattle in my sunroof and had to take the headliner down. To do so, I had to first remove the interior panels and seats. Everything is easy, and pretty straightforward, just very time consuming. The main things that held my headliner up (2004 model) The read cargo light, the grabs by the B pillars, the front dome light/EVIC, and the sunvisors. Also, there is some wiring glued to the headliner above the front seats. I just pulled the wiring loose and Gorilla taped it to the ceiling. You'll need a small Torx bit to remove the sunvisors and clips. You'll need a large Torx driver (T40, I believe) to remove the seatbelts. I also used a 10mm, 13mm, 17mm, and 18mm sockets to remove the seats. You'll also need a 7.5mm socket to remove the grab bars that hold A-pillars on. I had a buddy help me to remove and reinstall the headliner. It tends to fold at the rear grab bars. I'm not sure the size of the wires you'll be running, but so long as they're not huge, and they isn't a lot of them, you should be able to just tuck them in under the edge of the headliner without having to take it down. |

Thanks for the input, I guess I am blessed as I don't have an evic (spring project) or a sunroof in the way at the moment. I am hoping that I can simply pull the headliner down just enough to drill the hole for the aerial mount and run the coax to the front A pillar. I will be the one helping, an experienced radio amateur who spent 35 years installing commercial mobile radio gear will be doing the actual install. |

I am trying to figure out this post. And why did you remove the seats? The bolts on my 07 are not torx they are regular metric bolts. |

I am trying to figure out this post. And why did you remove the seats? The bolts on my 07 are not torx they are regular metric bolts.[/quote] I had to remove the seat to physically get the headliner completely out of the Jeep. It's too wide to simply pull straight out the back. You have to lower one side and bring it out at an angle, which isn't possible with the seats. I had to remove the seats to get the interior panels off as well. While I had the interior out, I decide to sound dampen it. I used some of the rubberized truck bed liner. I was amazed at how much quiter it made things. I expected some improvement, but not as much as I got. I spent under $100 sound dampening. I used autoZone's paint on kit, and 4 cans of their spray cans. I did everything except the rear cargo area (didn't feel like drilling out the riveted cargo hooks) and the doors. The doors are still on my 'to do list' but my work has unexpectedly got EXTREMELY busy (which is a good thing $$$). I was bored, work was slow and I was just sitting around the house. My wife was nagging me to do something, so rather than working on her honey-do list, I worked on my Jeep. I intentionally dragged the project out and made more work for myself. She didn't care what I was doing, so long as I was doing something. I got to tinker on my Jeep, with the appearance of being busy, and I kept the peace for a couple of days. When baby ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. |
