Ok so I'm getting rid of my current 12" setup up to give to my gf for her new car. My Audio shop said they would hook me up with a 12" Kicker CVR Comp Sub in a ported box with a 500 watt mono Kicker ZX500.1 for $400 installed. I was reading..... and the speaker they have at the shop is 4 ohms, while when I read on the website, the mono amp puts out 500 watts @ 2ohms, and says nothing at all about 4 ohms. How do they get 500 watts from that mono amp to that 4 ohm speaker? I'm not an audio guy...thanks for the explanation.

well it's all in how it is wired. i dont know if the kickers are dual voice coil or single. in case of single voice coils 2 subwoofers can be wired in either 2 or 8 ohm configuration. in case of 2 dual voice coil subwoofers you can wire to 1 or 4 ohms. remember when you wire in series you go up in ohms so 2 single voice coils would be 4+4 = 8 ohms but in parallel you would go down so 2 4 ohm single 4 ohm subwoofers would be 2 ohms. hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. THe speaker is a single 12", Dual Voice Coil speaker. If they try to put a Mono 500 watt amp that runs 500 watts to at 2 Ohms , doesn't that mean that if they run the amp to a 4 ohm speaker that I will only really be getting 250 watts to the sub?

so it is dual voice coil so you can wire both of them to a 1 or 4 ohm load. kicker is not known to be one ohm stable so to wire them to a 4 ohm load would be ok. if they are the subwoofer i think they are they are only 150 watt rms so 250 watts would be ok. just note most amps today are rated at 14.4 volts (perfect world). it never hurts to have a little more.

well you can run 16volt batterys (kenetik) but it's mainly for competition use. bad things can happen to stock electrical components when upping the voltage.
