Post subject:  CB antenna wiring

All,

Good afternoon. Got a question, I bought a low profile antenna mount for my Jeep and it has 2 connectors - one is "center coax lead" and the other is "coax ground". Has anyone split a coax cable like this? How do you do it? I have been Googlin' for a while and can't seem to find anything. Thanks in advance.

That is very strange, not using the standard RF connectors...

Well to separate the coax into two leads, strip the coax outer cover back a couple of inches then at the the cut, use a pick or small screw driver to create an opening in the braided shield and pull the center lead through the opening. You should now have a braided copper lead and the insulated center lead to terminate at the connectors.

Thanks man! The mount is made by FireStik model number is K-4T2. There is another option using a "Fire-Ring" cable by FireStik - I can't seem to find it anywhere locally (I want to install this weekend).

Don't use FireStik connectors or anything. They use connectors that are made in china and are just awful. You're going to want something that uses Amphenol ends. Also, as far as grounding the antenna, usually you should just be able to have the antenna grounded to the mount, and the mount grounded to the vehicle body (which is grounded to the unibody of course).

Take your FireStik cables and connectors and then compare them to a 20.00 coax setup. I guarantee you'll talk miles further and hear a lot better.

There is a way you can turn house wiring into an antenna. I used one for a while and it works okay but very directional. I wonder how the KJ computer would like that? If it didn't mess things up it would solve a lot of antenna problems.
