new speaker install

Hey all,

Just picked up a pair of infinity reference component speakers to replace the fronts. The original stereo setup that came in my libby was the bone-stock stereo. No amps connected to the front speakers or anything. My question is, should I just use the existing speaker wiring to connect the infinity components (including whatever is being used as a crossover for the tweets), or should I rewire and use the crossover pieces that come with the speakers? Where are the factory crossovers for the tweets? Trying to figure the best way of going about this...

you might blow the head unit if the components are 2 ohm. best to replace the head unit with an aftermarket one and put an amp to them. they'll sound alot better to. cause stock sucks. should get a subwoofer while you're at it too

What he said, Get a new headunit as well. You'd be amazed at the difference that alone will make. It almost makes your stock speakers sound halfway decent.

As far as wiring goes you would be fine using stock stuff if you don't' want to get in there and re-wire everything. Just clip off the connectors there and wire them up. The stock tweets crossover is built in to them so there isn't a crossover anywhere. What I did for simplicity was splice into the stock wires and run a longer wire to the side compartments on the front, stuck the crossover in there and then ran a wire back up to the new tweets. No big deal there.

These are the ones I got, looks like they are 2 ohm.

They sound pretty crappy with the stock head unit, worse than the stock speakers actually, no base at all. Guessing that the stock head unit doesn't come close to having enough power to make these speakers operate properly.

ok great thanks for the info. I think I'm probably going to rewire anyways. Good excuse to spend some quality time with the jeep this weekend

Great idea re the crossover placement. I wasn't sure where the heck to put them.

Alright so sounds like I should get a new head unit and amp if I want to see the full potential of these speakers. Looks like the speakers are 90 watts RMS, so I'm assuming that the amp should ideally push 90 watts rms per channel? Go with an Infinity amp to match the speakers?

you can go with the reference amp but remember you get what you pay for specially when it comes to car audio (unless you got screwed over). if you look at that website it says impedance 2 ohms in the box to the right of the picture so yes they are 2 ohm. make sure the amp is 2 ohm stable before you purchase and if you get a 4 channel amp do not bridge it unless it is 2 ohms stable bridged. you still need a subwoofer :idea:

I'll have to agree with Frosted again here. I'm afraid you won't be 100% impressed with your bass response on aftermarket speakers. While the stock speaks suck they are made to have a little more bass to them for an overall decent sound image. Aftermarkets aren't, they are made to sound good not have an overall sound. Your best bet would be to get a sub. If that's not an option look into some mid woofers for the rear doors. You'll get a little more bass from those. I'm not saying what you got will sound bad at all. The sound quality will be way better than stock but you won't have the overall sound that your expecting.
