so im new to the 4x4 scene, and ive never used a CB, could someone give me a break down of all these terms. for example, what does it mean to be tuned and peaked? what are the advanteages of running more watts? what are roger and echo boards? etc. etc.

Tuned & Peaked: that means tuning the transmitter section for maximum power and still keep everything on frequency.

Power (watts): under ideal conditions more power = more distance. But, to give you an idea of how this works. If you are receiving a signal from someone at say an 8 on your meter, in order for that person to give you a 9 they would have to double their power output.

Roger Beep and Echo: The Roger Beep just adds a beep sound when you let off the button on the microphone. Echo adds an echo to your voice.

There are other things you can do also. You can add channels above 40 and below 1. If you have SSB (Single Side Band) you can "open your clarifier". These are about as illegal as you can get, along with more power. The advantage of "upper and lower" channels is that they are not as busy. Fewer people tends to make your talking distance longer. There are a ton of people that can do all these modifications to a CB radio. There are very few that can do it correctly. Doing these things wrong can cause lots of problems. Distortion in transmission, splatter of your signal over onto another channel and short life for your radio. A good quality radio in the hands of a good technician will give you very good service. A cheap radio is just that and a good radio worked on by someone that doesn't do good work = junk.

Don't let just anyone handle your CB or it will sound like junk. I know some people that dont even run amps and they are on 4 different channels at the same time. They hit up channel 6 and they are spilling onto the emergency channel. Make sure it gets done right, and not just a radio chop shop. I am partial to Cobra and Uniden. Some exports sound OK but they just splatter usually once you turn up the power unless you get a real good export tuner.
