Post subject:  Supplemental 12V plug installation
Has anyone installed any additional 12V plugs? Just got the new car last night and noticed, upon lengthy review, that there is only one 12V plug. I probably should have looked for this earlier, but it wouldn't have stopped me from getting the KJ.

I'm used to 2 in my old car (cell phone charger/IPOD FM transmitter), and just bought an XM system that will require a third. I'm thinking about trying to install one of these (in the picture) in the little cubby hole near the current 12V plug. It only runs $10, so it's not a huge gamble if it doesn't pan out.

Anyone have any experience with this and how I might get started? Thanks in advance.

for the xm system, just go to radio shack and get a cigarette lighter port and wire it into the radio's 12v switched feed. you can then hide the adapter behind the dash. The plus side of this is that the xm will turn off with the car, as opposed to you doing it manually when plugged into the regualr outlet which is not switched.

look on www.xmfan.com, I found a lot of good information there on wiring up xm stuff.

Thats a good plan, thanks. I guess I won't have to do any modification to the rest of the dash if I go that route. How many times can you tap into the radio 12V before it becomes a problem? (electronics newbie) I'd like to do the same for my cell phone charger if possible.

I'd only do it once for the xm. tap into the cig lighter port for your cellphone, or get a exrternal splitter.

I bought a triple adaptor at Radio Shack also but it plugs directly into the lighter without the wire extension. Saves a lot of room since it is on a hinge and can flip straight up so all the plugs that are plugged into it sit flush to the dash up and down and don't stick out. (2nd image below) When I run my GPS & PC I use one that has a plug and then a Y-adaptor with a socket on each end of a short section of wire. (1st image below) This way both plugs sit on either side of my hump (see pic below - my pc is on the passenger side and my GPS is on the dash on my side) and also stay out of the way. I was thinking of buying the cubby mounted spare outlet from, I believe, the 02 Libby which has 2 outlets instead of one.

I installed two small coax outlets in my overhead EVIC, 1 for my XM roady and the 2 for my radar detector. This cleared the two regular outlets in my dash. It also clears up all the wires in the passenger compartment.
