Post subject:  Anyone changed a battery cable in a 2002?
Hi All
I cant find a post about this, so hopefully this isnt a question that's already been addressed, but has anyone changed the battery cable in a 2002? Battery acid finally ate through the cable and the connector came off so we had to get a new one (dealer only part, $154.00). We've got our trusty Haynes manual here but it doesnt always cover everything, so we were hoping for some info from someone who'd actually done it... Anything we need to watch out for?

Anything to watch out for? - Not really except for battery acid maybe.

You didn't say which cable? When I recently bought my '02 Limited, it had a brand new battery but I installed those felt pads (Red +, Green -) and a can of that red stuff that prevents corrosion (forget what it's called?). I recommend using both.

i can atleast say that we used to use a Red lithium spray that was a high temp spray on batt terminals and the rubber parts on the hoods of IH road tractors that tended to melt and stuff

i think i've seen a "special" red spray too but it's probably just red colored white lithium

ROFL Which cable? This cable looks like an octopus, it's got 6 ends that have to be hooked up to different things, including two for the battery, one for the alternator, one for the ignition and I'm not sure what all else..... not sure why they put such a silly battery cable the Liberty, but we're going to go for it and try to put it on ourselves. Should be an adventure 8)

Thanks for the advice on the felt pads and the lithium grease, I didnt see the post till this evening and we are all the way out in the sticks, so maybe we'll add those later.

I've replaced the negative terminal connector and one of the cables.

On the negative terminal, one goes to the inner wheel fender (by the ECU) and I think the other goes to the engine block, not 100% sure.

Just cut off the connector, a dremel with a cut off wheel helps. Use a utility knife to cut off the wire insulation and crimp on a copper wire lug. I replaced the cable that goes to the inner fender with a new pre-crimped one.
