Post subject:  Need a new GPS...
I've been running with a Garmin Nuvi for a while and it's worked great... but the time has come for something bigger and better. I don't know much about the higher-end GPS stuff but here's what I'm really looking for:

Plenty of memory to save trail routes
Easy screen to read while driving
Expandable maps so I can take it to Mexico, Canda, South America, etc..
Topo map compatible

I don't really care about points of interest, restaurants, etc etc... I just want a good one that I can save all my trails on and overlay them on topos... and is easy to read

I can't think of what else but that should be a good start... if there's anything else I'm going to want (or not want) be sure to let me know :D

Might take a look at the Lowrance Baja unit - I know Clint (skrracing) and Mike (dynamike) have been running the older 480c (or 540c maybe for Mike) for a few years and really like them. They are not the cheapest units on the market but I think they are worth a look; I'm even thinking about upgrading to one from my GPS V later this year. You might search online to see if you can find a 540 series for a bit less now that the new HDS units are out.

Right now my big toss up is between a dedicated GPS (like the Lowrance) or going with a UMPC with an external GPS antenna.

Here's one example:

The computer and software would be a nice touch as I can also hook my cellular modem to it and get internet in the KJ with a powered antenna outside. Not sure how the little computer would hold up to the dust and whatnot though... hmmmm price is about the same for each setup.

The Delorme setup let's me log trails like this (pretty sweet):

To do that, you'd want something like a Toughbook (not cheap) and a dedicated mount for the laptop. If you know somebody in law enforcement, ask them to let you look at their mount... they bolt into the passenger seat mounting bolts. A really neat idea the way they work.

The reason I'm considering that type of setup is becuase I work with the toughbook tablets every day in my ambulance... it's a sweet setup indeed... toughbooks are pricey though :shock:

My opinion is that any of the 'netbook' size PCs would be fine for offroad provided that you went with a unit with solid-state memory storage - off-pavement travel plays heck with traditional hard drives :shock: And for mounting the RAM mounts are pretty sweet 8)

I forgot the name of the company that makes the mounts... thanks

All the UMPC's seems to be coming with the solid state drives now so that's good. I think a ghetto plastic sleeve over the keyboard and a screen protector would be sufficient in keeping the dust and grease out of it... I'm thinking that this might just be the way to go :D
