Does anyone know if all I have to change is the transfer case or is it even worth it? If it is what else would I have to consider changing? Thanks in advance,

Need a suitable tcase for the swap, and driveshafts that fit the tcase as well as your axles. Others can be much more specific. |

depending on what tcase your swapping, yeah. Or at least new ujoints/ends to match the tcase. I don't know it that well, just going based off of what i've read various places. |

I am confused, I just shift the lever from part time to full time, and visa-versa.

Here is a current list of Transfer Cases and current models that have them. http://www.jeep.com/en/4x4/how_systems_work/ |

You will need the t-case,shifter,and front/rear driveshafts to convert.Must also use a 242 out of a KJ as others may not work. |

I also have the 231 t-case also referred to as part time 4 wheel drive/command trac, the difference between the 231 and 242 is that the 242 adds the full time 4wd system otherwise all the gear ratios are the same. I actually have the the shifter and the 242 in my basement wanting to be installed. I need to do a little more solid research on the driveshaft's though. For those who say so, why are the driveshaft's different ? Is the shafts of different length? or is the spline count different ? or both ? Not that I'm completely confident of the sources on eBay but all the vendor's list the driveshafts, front and rear are the same for the 42rle tranny Im gonna have to find a libby out their with full time 4wd and take a measurement of the driveshafts, if im lucky I can find a local member |

A little update, I pulled out the rear drive shaft to change out the rear u joint today (closer to the differential side)(local shop wanted to charge almost 200 bucks out the door... U joint cost me 17 bucks and 3 hours from start to finish first time doing it). I counted the spline's/teeth my currently installed np231 t-case ( part time 4wd) and counted the spline/teeth on my np242 in my basement (also from a 2006 jeep liberty) and they both had a spline count of 32. I was able to slide my drive shaft right in with no problem ( pun intended) measurements 1 actual drive shaft from center of saddle to center to saddle was 31 1/2 inches 2.measurement from end of saddle to end of saddle on the drive shaft was 32 1/2 3 total length from outermost bracket to the harmonic balancer was 36 7/16 So now I know that my drive shaft fits both np231 and np242 I just have to measure the driveshaft's of a libby with the np242. Anyone out their with the full time 4wd np242/select trac have some measurements you can take ? I might just find one in a parking lot some where and slide underneath and take some measurements and hope the owner doesn't see me ....lol P.S I think this topic should probably be in the kj 4x4 discussion not the electronics section ( might be able to get more responses?) |
