Since my GDE tune I've noticed at 2,000-2,400 RPMs that there is a whine noise comeing from under the hood. It's only when the engine is underload. Cold or hot doesn't matter. Speed doesn't matter either. I've check all intake and boost hose connections. Is this something to worry about?!

I use to own a 95 f150. It would make the same noise when cold. It would come from the intake. I was told that it was normal back then.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Brian

2000-2400 is right at the torque peak, when boost would normally be at the highest points. The turbo shouldn't be audible at that speed, because the whistle would be higher than human hearing. What you may be hearing is a boost leak.

Are your boost hoses original? The oil from the CCV eats them from the inside, making the rubber porous. Then the boost pressure forces the oil deeper into the wall of the hose where it further degrades it... As more oil is forced in behind it... Until finally the hose starts "growing hair" or a layer of oily filth on the outside of the hose. This is the final stage. As the pores in the hose get larger, more and more oil / air is forced through, until finally it usually opens up with a WHOOSH and you have a massive tear in the hose. Usually on the bottom where it is hard to see without removing the hose from the engine.

I have upgraded the hoses to samcos at the same time as the tune was installed. I will double check everything. Maybe I can get a video or the noise. I wish it would have with out a load so I could pop the hood and look/listen. Kind of hard to do while driving!

have u checked play on the turbo shaft? The hose going from the air box to the turbo also can get bad.

Air "line" from airbox to turbo has tear in it if no leak in any CAC hose.

I hear mine 'whistle' under sustained load from about 1800 to 2000 rpm (around 30-35 mph) This only happens when climbing the local mountain pass at low speed.

I've heard it since I bought it. Yep, all the mentioned hoses, etc are in good condition. No play in the turbo.

The valley is flat to the Nevada border to the west, and Idaho to the north. I never hear it when driving any of the flat stuff.

I posit that it is not inaudible under certain conditions.
