Went to the hardware and used my remote start from inside. Went out to the jeep and got in and while fumbling for my keys I touched the brake pedal and it shut off. Inserted the key and
all the dash lights came on but turning the key produced nothing. Tried again still nothing. Tried with the remote starter still nothing. Disconnected the remote starter (this is possible with this model) and still nothing. All the lights but no crank. I checked the one inside fuse #14 and it was good. Checked the 2 in the power box under the hood as well as swapped out the relay there and still no joy. Battery is good. Do these starter moters have any history of sticking or just quitting with no warning? I put my code reader on and got 1140 (GDE Tune) and p0203 although I had no cel for that when going there. Any ideas? Or next steps?
Thanks
Al

I cannot speak for why it stopped when you touched the brake pedal but for a switch on but no start can be the rod that goes under the steering column to the "real" ignition switch on the left side of the column and of course a battery that's "ok" enough to light dash but no ok enough for the ECU to grant permission for the starter to engage or a bad transmission "not in gear" switch/cable. Take a look at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=61233&p=678574&hilit=+brother#p678574

Thanks for your reply Papa. The stopping when I touched the brake is just an antitheft device within the remote starter. When I tried it again with the remote starter it did the same as with the attempted key start so I don't believe it could be the mechanical switch or actuator rod as the remote does all that electronicly I believe. The transmission switch may be a possibility.
I am liking that jumper on the starter relay in the post you linked to though, as that would eliminate some things and help pinpoint others.
Thats the next step when my buddy gets off work to take me to the jeep. Of course it's darn cold too. :(
If anyone else has any ideas I'm all ears.
Thanks again

I just got back from trying the starter relay jump and it did sound like the solenoid kicked and that it was going to spin the starter but I moved a bit and lost connection and could not get it to repeat. I am thinking it is probably the starter and will have to wait till daylight tomorrow to go back and do battle again. I also put a good "booster" battery on it just in case but no change. I also tried disconnecting the battery to see if that might reset anything. Nope. My anti theft light comes on for a moment when the key is first turned to the on position and the goes out. I think that is correct. I tried another key as well.
Any more ideas out there?

Jumpering pins 30 and 87 in the Starter Relay socket, with transmission in Park (so you don't run yourself over!) and the key in the ignition and ignition switched on should definitely turn the engine over and it should run....check fuse 8 (40 A) in the relay box under the hood.

Make sure the battery connections are clean and tight, the negative battery lead going to ground is clean and tight and likewise the grounding strap from engine to chassis is clean and tight on both ends.

If the engine turns over but does not start then swap out the ASD relay with one another one or try jumper pins 30 and 87 in the ASD relay socket...this should not be needed though as your anti-theft light goes out soon after turning the ignition on!

Went to the jeep today and the battery was TOTALLY dead. I am hoping that is because I left my jumper in the starter relay last night.( the key was not in it) I guess that was a bit of a "bonehead" maneuver on my part but I was frozen and hurrying as they wanted to lock the hardware store gates up.
Anyhow I removed the jeep battery and put in my boat battery as it's got big balls. Damned if the jeep didn't fire right up. As the boat battery is taller than the jeep one I thought I should swap them around while it was running and as soon as I connected the second cable to the original battery the engine died. Not sure if the Charging system was not up to the task or if there is a issue with the battery. Boat battery back in closed the hood carefully and I was able to get home. The wife used it to go to the store and it started for her no problem. I had to go to a buddies place and when leaving it would not start for me. I had an abusive relationship with the starter a couple of times and still no joy. I also looked for the engine to chassis ground strap but did not see it. So I hooked up some jumpers from engine to chassis and battery to engine just in case and there was no change. Then I crawled under a bit further (snow) to where I could see and get a few good swings at the solenoid and it started right up. I called a rebuild shop that has done work for me before and they didn't even have a parts breakdown for it so without getting their hands on it were unable to say if they could rebuild or not. I just ordered a new starter through them for $200.00 + taxes and some shipping.( No core charge) That beat the hell out of the down the street parts shop that wanted $299.00 plus tax and core and that was a deal. I should have it Friday.
I will take the dead one to them so if they can rebuild I will have a spare.
I moved my bus out of the way and parked the jeep in the snow free zone that was underneath, the jeep is tarped in so my work area won't be too bad. Oh the joys!!!
Thanks for the replies
Al

This is a great way to fry your ECU and other sensitive electronics. You should NEVER disconnect a battery while the engine is running.

Wow That's good to know dirtmover. I guess I am still stuck in the "olden" days when that was also often used to check if alternator was putting out. darn technology.
Thanks.
